2022–2026 Toyota Tundra Upgrades, Ranked: 5 Mods for the Composite-Bed 3rd Gen, in Order
Five upgrades for the third-generation Tundra, ranked in the order most owners should buy them. This truck's order is shaped by a composite bed that needs covering more than protecting, two cabs that split the cab accessories, a hybrid battery under the rear seat, and a bed rack market that hasn't caught up with the 2022 redesign.

- Nothing from 2007–2021 carries over. New cab, rocker, front end and composite bed: buy listings that name 2022 or later.
- Cab decides the cabin parts, bed decides the bed parts. CrewMax has the 5.5 or 6.5 ft bed; Double Cab has the 6.5 or 8.1 ft.
- Look in the bed for deck rails. Retrax and TruXedo split cover parts by them, and BAK's MX4 gives up the cleats.
- The hybrid changes one part. The i-FORCE MAX battery sits under the rear seat, so confirm the rear liner.
- No hitch on the shopping list. Our data lists a Class IV, 2 in receiver and a 12,000 lb maximum with the factory tow package.

Floor liners first: two questions, the lowest price on the page
Floor liners lead on the Tundra because they cost the least and protect the one part of the truck every owner uses on every drive. The 2022 redesign brought a new cab on the TNGA-F platform, so 2014–2021 liners are out; Husky's catalog shows the break, with set 99581 for the old CrewMax and 99481 for the new one. Two questions decide fit. The first is cab. CrewMax and Double Cab share a front floor, which is why Husky's 18571 front pair is listed for both, but the rear floors differ and most budget sets are cut for the CrewMax only. Husky's 99471 is the single Double Cab set in our guide. The second is powertrain. The i-FORCE MAX battery sits under the rear seat, so the rear piece is the one to confirm. LNZMPART and AOMSAZTO name the hybrid in their titles; Husky and LASFIT don't. Prices in our guide run about $80–$130 for budget TPE, about $130–$170 for LASFIT and about $150–$230 for Husky's WeatherBeater sets, which Husky says are made in the USA with a lifetime warranty against cracks and breaks. The trade-off is firm, tall walls against softer TPE with a lower lip. If your CrewMax has the sliding rear seat, run it through its travel after fitting.
Skip it if: You already have a molded 2022+ set that hooks onto the driver-side retention posts.
Our best overall: Husky Liners WeatherBeater 99481 ($160–$230)
Compare all 6 floor mats & liners picks →Tonneau cover second: the composite bed doesn't rust, but it doesn't lock either
A tonneau cover takes second place for a reason particular to this truck. The bed itself needs less protecting than a steel one, because Toyota's sheet-molded composite resists dents and rust, but the bed still pools water and leaves tools on display. Covers are sold by bed length, and the Tundra has three, which listings print as 66.7, 78.7 and 96 in. The 5.5 ft CrewMax bed has the most choice and the 8.1 ft Double Cab bed the least. Next, look for the deck rail system. Retrax and TruXedo sell separate parts for trucks with and without it, Extang and Tyger sell one part for both, and BAK says its MX4 needs the tie-down cleats removed for good. Prices in our guide run about $248 for Tyger's T3, about $450–$490 for the Extang Trifecta 2.0 and TruXedo Lo Pro, about $899 for the Gator FX, about $1,100 for the BAKFlip MX4 and about $1,850 for the RetraxPRO MX. The three hard covers are rated at 300, 400 and 500 lb in that order; soft covers have no rating, and a knife gets through vinyl. Trail Special Edition bed boxes rule most covers out. If a rack is likely, read slot five before paying.
Skip it if: You carry tall loads nearly every day, or your Trail Special Edition's bed boxes block the clamps.
Our best overall: BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover 448440 ($1,100)
Compare all 6 tonneau covers picks →Running boards third: a tall cab that every passenger has to climb
Running boards rank third because the Tundra's step-in is high and it affects every rider on every trip, most of all in a CrewMax that carries kids or older passengers. A step also stops boots dragging mud across the sill onto the liners you just bought. Fit is locked to generation and cab. The 2022 truck has a new rocker, and Go Rhino sells separate brackets for 2007–2021 Tundras. Every pick in our guide is a CrewMax part; the Double Cab's shorter rear doors need shorter boards, so those owners must shop by cab name. The hybrid uses the same CrewMax body and rocker. Prices run about $140–$260 for budget two-step rails, oval bars and drop steps, about $200–$280 for Rough Country's 5 in BA2 and about $430–$600 for Go Rhino's galvanized RB20 Slim, RB20 and RB30. RealTruck lists the RB30 with a 7 in step, flow-through slots and a 600 lb per side rating, the only published load figure in the group. Go Rhino's Amazon titles stop at 2024, so confirm 2025–2026. The cost is side clearance, and drop steps hang lowest. Some trims arrive with factory boards, which an aftermarket set replaces.
Skip it if: Your trim came with factory boards you like, or it's a trail truck that needs rock sliders.
Our best overall: Go Rhino RB30 Running Boards & Brackets Bedliner 69643687T ($450–$600)
Compare all 7 running boards & steps picks →Lighting fourth: well-documented 2022+ kits and a low entry price
Lighting ranks ahead of the bed rack on the Tundra because makers have built 2022+ kits for nearly every mount on this truck, and the entry price is low. Cali Raised's hood-hinge ditch kit starts at about $170 and bolts to factory points, and its plug-in fog pocket kit is about $200. Baja's S2 SAE fog kit, from about $680, is designed to the SAE J583 fog standard, which makes it the street-friendly choice; most other bars and pods are off-road lighting in most states and stay off on public roads. The grille is where trim matters. Diode Dynamics' SS20 kit, from about $500, mounts inside the TRD Pro-style grille only, and Toyota's 2027 announcement confirms the current generation already offers a factory grille-mounted light bar. Our guide couldn't confirm which 2022–2026 trims carry it, so look behind your grille before buying a second one. Standard-grille trucks use the lower bumper opening instead, and Baja's fog kit carries a non-TRD Pro note. Brackets from 2007–2021 trucks don't fit, and Toyota has announced another new front end for 2027, so buy kits that name your year. Each light needs its own relay, fuse and switch.
Skip it if: You drive lit roads and have no use for light you must switch off in traffic.
Our best grille light bar: Diode Dynamics TRD Pro Grille Light Bar Kit compatible with Toyota Tundra 2022-2025 (From $500)
Compare all 5 led light bars picks →Bed rack last: a thin market on a bed that rewards caution
The bed rack comes last on the Tundra, and the reason is the market more than the idea. Few brand-name racks name the 2022+ truck in their listings, so three of the five picks in our guide are universal clamp racks that carry a confirm note. YZONA's 16.8–25 in rack, about $500, is rated by its maker at 1,000 lb stationary and 500 lb in motion and is listed as working with bed covers, but YZONA's page covers 2007–2025 Tundras in one fitment, spanning the old steel bed and the new composite one. Its 16–24.8 in rack, about $359, isn't cover-compatible. Syneticusa's retractable cover with an R3 rack names the 2022–2026 5.5 ft bed, with the price on the listing. Three things decide fit: bed length, whether your truck has the deck rail system that rail-mount racks bolt to, and the composite bed itself. A rack concentrates weight on a few points, and Rough Country sells a bed brace kit for this truck aimed at racks and tents. For tent campers this slot matters far more than its rank suggests. For everyone else it's the purchase most often made for a single trip. Count rack, tent and gear against payload.
Skip it if: Nothing you carry is taller than the cab or longer than the bed.
Our best overall: YZONA Adjustable 16.8-25 in High Bed Racks ($500)

Towing: what the Tundra already has
There is no trailer hitch guide for the 3rd-gen Tundra on this site, and the stored facts explain why most owners won't miss one. Our vehicle data lists a Class IV hitch with a 2 in receiver and a maximum tow rating of 12,000 lb with the factory tow package. Wikipedia's Tundra page gives the same 12,000 lb maximum and a top payload of 1,940 lb.
Read those numbers with three cautions. First, they are ceilings for the best configuration, and neither source says which cab, bed, drivetrain and powertrain reaches them. Your figure is on the door-jamb labels and in the owner's manual, and it can sit well below the headline. Second, we could not confirm from Toyota that every grade and model year leaves the factory with the receiver fitted, so look under the rear bumper before you assume. If the receiver is there, an aftermarket hitch adds nothing. If it isn't, a Toyota parts counter can tell you what your VIN was built with. Third, a receiver never raises a rating; the lowest-rated part of the chain sets the limit.
The towing money is better spent on a ball mount with the right rise or drop to keep the trailer level, a locking hitch pin and whatever brake control your trailer requires. Tongue weight counts against payload along with passengers, a hard cover, a bed rack and a tent. A camping rig that also tows is where a Tundra's payload sticker gets tight first.
CrewMax or Double Cab, and which of three beds
Half of this page's fit questions are answered by two facts about your truck. Cab decides floor liners and running boards. Bed length decides the cover and the rack. The cab doesn't tell you the bed, because the 6.5 ft box is sold behind both cabs. Wikipedia lists the Double Cab on SR, SR5 and Limited only and the CrewMax on every grade. If you're unsure of the bed, measure inside at the rail from the bulkhead to the closed tailgate.
| Cab / bed | Covers and racks | Liners and boards | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CrewMax, 5.5 ft (listed as 66.7 in) | Most cover choices; Syneticusa's cover-and-rack system and most rack listings target it | Every liner and running board pick in our guides except Husky's Double Cab set | The TRD Pro and Capstone bed, per our bed rack guide |
| CrewMax, 6.5 ft (78.7 in) | 6.5 ft parts: BAKFlip MX4 448441, TruXedo Lo Pro 564301, Tyger TG-BC3T1063; Syneticusa has a separate 6.5 ft listing | Same CrewMax liners and boards; AOMSAZTO's bundled bed mat is 5.5 ft only | Order the cover by bed, not cab |
| Double Cab, 6.5 ft | Same 6.5 ft covers and racks | Husky 99471 liners; boards must name the Double Cab, and none in our guide do | SR, SR5 and Limited only (Wikipedia) |
| Double Cab, 8.1 ft (listed as 96 in) | Fewest covers (RetraxPRO MX 80865 is one); confirm hoop spacing on adjustable racks | Husky 99471 liners; Double Cab boards | Listings call it the 8 ft bed |
The composite bed, the deck rails and the Trail Special Edition
Three bed details show up in every bed purchase on this truck.
The bed is composite. For 2022 Toyota replaced the steel box with sheet-molded compound over aluminum cross members. It resists dents and rust, which is why a cover here is about weather and theft more than saving the bed. It also changes how you tighten things. Clamp covers and clamp racks should go to the maker's torque, evenly side to side, and no further. For a rack carrying a tent, ask the seller whether a brace is advised; Rough Country sells a bed brace kit for the 2022–2026 Tundra for that purpose.
The deck rail system splits part numbers. Our vehicle data lists deck rails as this truck's bed rail system, and our guides treat it as an available option, so look along the inside of both bed walls for the tracks and sliding cleats. With rails, the RetraxPRO MX is part 80861 and the TruXedo Lo Pro is 564001; without, they are 80860 and 563901. Extang's Trifecta 2.0 and Tyger's T3 fit either way. BAK's MX4 fits, but its fitment notes say the cleats come off and can't go back. Rail-mount racks, such as Cali Raised LED's, need the rails, and Yakima says tracked beds take its Track Kit 1 or 2.
Trail Special Edition bed boxes block most of it. BAK, Retrax and Extang exclude those factory storage boxes from their cover fitment, and no rack listing in our guide addresses them. On that truck, get the seller's answer in writing before you order anything for the bed.
Hybrid, TRD Pro and other trims: what really changes
Trim names cause more worry than they deserve on the Tundra. Grades change seats and leather far more than they change floors, rockers or bed rails. These are the cases where our guides found a real difference.
| Truck | What it has | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| i-FORCE MAX hybrid, any grade | Battery under the rear seat | Confirm the rear floor liner; no hybrid-specific covers, racks, boards or light kits in our guides |
| TRD Pro | Hybrid CrewMax; TRD Pro grille | Hybrid rear liner; Diode's SS20 grille kit fits but runs on its own harness and switch; Baja's S2 SAE fog kit has a non-TRD Pro note; sliders rather than boards for trail use |
| Capstone | Hybrid CrewMax | Hybrid rear liner; check for factory running boards before ordering a set |
| Standard-grille trucks | No TRD Pro-style grille | Grille light kits don't apply; use the lower bumper opening, fog pockets or hood hinges |
| Trail Special Edition | Factory storage boxes in the bed | Most covers excluded; ask rack sellers in writing |
| Double Cab (SR, SR5, Limited) | Shorter rear doors and rear floor; 6.5 or 8.1 ft bed | Husky 99471 liners; Double Cab boards; fewer long-bed covers |
Decide the rack before the cover, then install in this order
The bed rack is last on the buying list and first on the deciding list, because the rack you want can rule out the tonneau cover you were about to buy. The pairings our guides could document:
- Cover-compatible clamp rack: YZONA says its 16.8–25 in rack works with tonneau and bed covers. Its 16–24.8 in rack and OTHOWE's 22.5 in rack are for open beds.
- Railed retractable: Retrax sells the PRO as an XR (T-80861) with T-slot rails for crossbars or a tent.
- One-box system: Syneticusa pairs a retractable cover with its R3 rack for the 2022–2026 5.5 ft bed, with a separate 6.5 ft listing. The listing doesn't separate the rack's rating from the cover's, so ask.
- Tower rack: Yakima offers Tonneau Kit 1 for the OverHaul HD on select covers.
One caution for deck rail trucks: a cover that takes the cleats off, as BAK says the MX4 does, and a rack that bolts to the rails may be competing for the same strip of bed wall. Ask both sellers before buying the second part.
Then fit things in this order: floor liners (a few minutes), the cover, the rack over it, running boards whenever they arrive, and lighting last. Lights go last because a rack gives them a second home. Several racks in our guide ship with LED bars, and rack-mounted lights keep glare off the hood. If you're weighing a roof bar, note that Baja says its 9XL roof kit needs drilling and won't work with a roof rack.
What to avoid
Used parts from a 2007–2021 Tundra. Liners, covers, boards, racks and light brackets from the old truck fit a different cab, rocker, bed and front end. Only the bars and pods themselves move across.
Buying bed parts by cab, or cab parts by bed. The 6.5 ft box sits behind both cabs. Covers and racks go by bed length; liners and boards go by CrewMax or Double Cab.
A grille light kit without the TRD Pro-style grille. Diode's and Baja's grille kits are built for that grille. Standard-grille trucks need a lower bumper, fog pocket or hood-hinge mount.
A universal rack ordered without a question. Several rack listings span the old steel bed and the new composite one. Ask the seller to confirm the clamps on a 2022+ bed, your bed length and your rail setup.
Frequently asked questions
What should I upgrade first on a 2022–2026 Tundra?
Floor liners, then a tonneau cover. Liners cost the least, from about $80 for a budget TPE set to about $230 for Husky's WeatherBeater, and they only need two facts from you: CrewMax or Double Cab, and gas or i-FORCE MAX hybrid. The cover comes next because the composite bed shrugs off dents and rust but does nothing to keep rain or passing eyes off what's in it. Running boards follow on a truck this tall. Lighting and a bed rack come last, though the rack decision has to be made before you pay for the cover.
Do I need to buy a trailer hitch for a 2022+ Tundra?
Probably not, but look before you assume. Our vehicle data lists a Class IV hitch with a 2 in receiver for this generation and a maximum tow rating of 12,000 lb with the factory tow package, and Wikipedia gives the same 12,000 lb ceiling. We couldn't confirm from Toyota that every grade and year has the receiver fitted, so check under the rear bumper. If it's there, an aftermarket trailer hitch adds nothing. Your own limit is the figure on the door-jamb labels and in the owner's manual, which depends on cab, bed, drivetrain and powertrain.
How much does it cost to add all five upgrades to a Tundra?
From the prices on our five guides' picks, a budget build runs about $1,000–$1,150: a budget TPE liner set, Tyger's T3 soft cover, two-step rails or oval bars, a Cali Raised ditch or fog kit and YZONA's 16–24.8 in rack. A mid build runs about $1,780–$1,940 with LASFIT liners, a soft Extang or TruXedo cover, Rough Country boards, Diode's grille kit and YZONA's cover-compatible rack. A premium build with Husky liners, a BAKFlip MX4 or RetraxPRO MX, Go Rhino boards, Baja's SAE fog kit and the same YZONA rack runs about $2,870–$3,860. All figures are approximate.
Do accessories from a 2007–2021 Tundra fit the 2022+ truck?
Almost none do. The 2022 Tundra moved to the TNGA-F platform with a new cab, rocker, front end and a composite bed, and makers split their catalogs at that year. Husky sells liner set 99581 for 2014–2021 CrewMax trucks and 99481 for 2022–2026. BAK's MX4 is 448409 for the old 5.5 ft bed and 448440 for the new one. Go Rhino sells separate brackets for 2007–2021 trucks, and Cali Raised sells separate 2014–2021 and 2022+ ditch brackets. Light bars and pods themselves are universal; their brackets aren't. Treat any listing that spans both generations as a question for the seller.
Does the i-FORCE MAX hybrid change which upgrades fit?
It changes one part. The hybrid battery sits under the rear seat, so the rear floor liner is the piece to confirm. LNZMPART and AOMSAZTO name the hybrid in their titles; Husky's and LASFIT's CrewMax sets don't, so ask before ordering. Everything else is shared. Our running board guide notes the hybrid uses the same CrewMax body and rocker, our bed rack guide found no hybrid-specific rack parts because the battery is in the cab, and Yota Xpedition lists Diode's grille light kit for hybrid and non-hybrid trucks. TRD Pro and Capstone trucks are hybrids, so the liner rule covers them.
What's different about upgrading a TRD Pro?
Three things. It's a hybrid CrewMax, so confirm the rear floor liner. It has the TRD Pro grille that Diode Dynamics' SS20 kit and Baja's S8 20 in kit are built around, but Toyota's 2027 announcement confirms the current generation offers a factory grille-mounted light bar, so look at what your grille already holds before paying about $500 for another. Baja's S2 SAE fog kit carries a non-TRD Pro note, so confirm that one with Baja. And if the truck sees rocks, our running board guide's advice is that rock sliders protect the rocker better than any board.
I have a Double Cab. Which of these upgrades are harder to buy?
Liners and running boards. Wikipedia lists the Double Cab on SR, SR5 and Limited grades only, with the 6.5 or 8.1 ft bed, and the aftermarket leans toward the CrewMax. Husky's WeatherBeater 99471 is the one Double Cab liner set in our guide, at about $150–$220, and every running board pick there is a CrewMax part, so you'll need boards whose listing names the Double Cab. Covers and racks go by bed length: 6.5 ft parts are easy to find, while the 8.1 ft bed has the fewest choices, with Retrax's PRO MX 80865 one listed option.
Can I run a tonneau cover and a bed rack together on a Tundra?
Yes, if you choose them as a pair. YZONA says its 16.8–25 in rack works with tonneau and bed covers, while its cheaper 16–24.8 in rack does not, and OTHOWE's 22.5 in rack is listed for trucks without a cover. Retrax sells the PRO in an XR version (T-80861) with T-slot rails for crossbars. Syneticusa sells a retractable cover and R3 rack for the 2022–2026 5.5 ft bed as one system. Yakima offers Tonneau Kit 1 for its OverHaul HD on select covers. Buying the cover first and hoping a rack will fit later is how owners end up replacing one.
Is the composite bed strong enough for a rack and a rooftop tent?
Makers sell racks for it, but treat mounting with care. Toyota's sheet-molded composite bed resists dents and rust, yet a rack puts a lot of weight on a few points. Rough Country sells a bed brace kit for the 2022–2026 Tundra that it markets for bed racks, tents and heavy cargo. Follow the rack maker's mounting points, torque evenly without over-tightening on the rail, and keep tent plus gear under the moving rating: 500 lb on YZONA's adjustable racks, 400 lb recommended by Cali Raised LED. Ask the seller whether a brace is advised for a sleeping load.
What would you buy first with about $350?
The two upgrades with the least fit risk. A budget TPE liner set at about $80–$120 covers a gas CrewMax; hybrid owners should spend about $90–$130 on LNZMPART's set, which names the i-FORCE MAX. Tyger's T3 soft tri-fold at about $248 covers a 5.5 ft bed, fits trucks with or without the rail system and carries a 5-year warranty. That's about $330–$380 in total. A soft cover is also a sensible placeholder while you decide on a rack, since it comes off in minutes and costs a fraction of a hard cover you might have to replace.
Will 2022–2026 Tundra upgrades fit the 2027 Tundra?
Don't count on it for anything at the front. Toyota's 2027 announcement describes new square front styling, rectangular fog lights integrated into the bumper, new grille designs and an upgraded grille light bar, so fog pocket kits and grille brackets are the parts most likely to change. Our guides cover 2022–2026 only. For liners, covers, boards and racks, wait until makers publish 2027 fitment and buy by part number. If you own a 2022–2026 truck, the reverse also applies: skip kits titled for 2027.
On the 2022–2026 Tundra, buy floor liners matched to cab and powertrain first and a tonneau cover matched to bed length and deck rails second, then running boards, lighting and a bed rack, and look under the bumper before spending anything on a hitch.
The third-generation Tundra is an easy truck to accessorize once four facts are written down: cab, bed length, deck rails or not, and gas or hybrid. Floor liners need the first and last of those and cost the least, so they go first. The tonneau cover needs the middle two and does the job the composite bed can't, keeping cargo dry and out of sight. Running boards earn third place on height alone, with the caveat that our guide's picks are CrewMax parts and Double Cab owners have to search by cab.
Lighting sits ahead of the bed rack here because its 2022+ kits are better documented and cheaper to start, while most racks still need a seller's confirmation on the composite bed. Tent campers should treat that as a reason to ask more questions, not to skip the rack. Owners of the related 2023–2026 Sequoia have their own guides; only Husky's front liner pair, listed for 2024–2026 Sequoias, crosses over. Each linked guide covers the fit details for its category.

We did not install any of these parts ourselves. The order comes from our five fit-checked 2022–2026 Tundra guides, weighing how many trucks each upgrade suits, what it costs, how often it's used and how much of its fit is confirmed for this generation (cab, bed length, deck rails, powertrain, grille). Price bands are the prices listed on those guides' picks, checked at maker and retailer stores in September 2026, and are approximate. Vehicle facts come from our vehicle data, the guides' sources and Wikipedia's Tundra page. Where we couldn't confirm a factory detail, the text says so.
