Is a retractable cover worth it on a mid-size truck?
It is if you open the bed many times a day or want to mount racks over the bed. The RetraxPRO XR locks at any position, carries 500 lb and adds T-slot rails for crossbars. The costs are the price ($1,999.99 at RealTruck), the canister at the front of a bed that is only 5 ft long to start with, and roller service that means pulling the canister. Retrax does not publish the canister depth on this listing, so ask the seller if bulkhead space matters.
Do the covers fit the PRO-4X and other trims?
Fit follows the bed, not the trim. The covers here are listed by model year and bed length, not by S, SV, SL or PRO-4X, so a PRO-4X Crew Cab with the 5 ft bed takes the same 5 ft part as an SV Crew Cab. What changes between trucks is equipment in the bed: Utili-track channels, bedliners that wrap over the rails, and bed-mounted accessories. Check those, then order by bed length.
Buy a 2022+ part for your bed length, check for Utili-track, then pick: the BAKFlip MX4 for the best all-round cover, the UnderCover Select for a hard cover under $900, and the RetraxPRO XR if a rack is in your plans.
The best Frontier cover is the one sold for the 2022–2026 truck and your bed length, not a 2005–2021 part that happens to share the name. Once that is settled, the MX4 has the best mix of rating, warranty and everyday use, though Utili-track owners should confirm the fit or choose the Extang Endure ALX, which carries 500 lb and states Utili-track compatibility. The UnderCover Select is the lower-cost hard cover, the RetraxPRO XR is the one to buy if crossbars or a rooftop tent are coming, and the Tyger T3 at $223 beats no-name listings.
