Best Running Boards & Side Steps for 2015–2020 Ford F-150: 6 Picks by Cab

Six side steps listed for the 13th-generation F-150, from AMP Research's PowerStep Smart Series to Rough Country's steel and aluminum boards and Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 bars for the SuperCrew and SuperCab. The first check is the cab, because the step is cut to it.

Key takeaways
  1. Cab first. The 2015–2020 F-150 came as a Regular Cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew, and a step is cut to the cab. Every Rough Country board here is Crew Cab only; Westin sells separate SuperCab and SuperCrew numbers.
  2. Many parts span 2015 to 2026. Westin and Rough Country list the same part numbers for both generations. AMP's PowerStep Smart Series 86151-01A is the exception: it is listed for 2015–2020 only.
  3. No drilling on any pick. Rough Country and Westin both describe bolt-on installs to factory mounting points.
  4. Warranties differ a lot. Rough Country: limited lifetime on the RPT2 and HD2 with a 1-year finish, 5 years on the BA2. Westin: lifetime on polished stainless, 3 years on black. AMP: 5 years or 60,000 miles.
  5. The Limited came with power boards. If your truck already has boards, the aftermarket set replaces them. We could not confirm which other trims had factory boards.

What to look for in F-150 running boards

Cab length, and the SuperCab trap

The 13th-gen F-150 came in three cabs: a two-door Regular Cab, the SuperCab with rear-hinged half doors, and the four-door SuperCrew. A running board or nerf bar is cut to the cab, and its brackets land on mounting points that move with the cab length, so a SuperCrew board does not fit a SuperCab. Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 page makes the split plain: 21-53935 is the black SuperCab bar and 21-53945 the black SuperCrew bar, both listed for 2015–2026. Rough Country's RPT2, HD2 and BA2 pages all say Crew Cab only. The SuperCab was common on XL and XLT work trucks and on the 2017–2020 Raptor, and it has fewer choices, which is why one pick here is a SuperCab-specific bar. Regular Cab owners have the fewest options and should use a maker's fit tool.

Nerf bar, flat board, drop step or power step

The step style decides who the truck is easy for. Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 is an oval tube with molded step pads, a narrow step with a clean look that sits close to the body. Rough Country's RPT2 is a flat steel board with what Rough Country calls a 6.75 in stepping area, and the BA2 a 5 in one; a flat board gives kids and older passengers a platform rather than a tube. Drop steps hang a lower step at each door for a lifted truck, and APS pocket steps in our product list are a budget version of that idea. A power step, such as AMP's PowerStep Smart Series, folds under the rocker when the doors are closed and drops when one opens. It gives the lowest step and the most clearance, at the highest price.

Which parts carry over to the 2021+ truck

The makers' fit lists show that most cab-mounted steps carry over to the 2021 redesign. Westin lists 21-53935 and 21-53945 for 2015–2026, and Rough Country lists the RPT2, HD2 and BA2 for 2015–2026 Crew Cab, including the Lightning and Tremor that arrived later. That means a board bought for a 2016 can move to a newer F-150. The power step is different: AMP's Smart Series 86151-01A is listed by Motomentum for the 2015–2020 F-150 only, and retailers show a separate 2021+ part. So if you are shopping used or planning to trade up, check the title's year range. A title that stops at 2020 is a fit for this truck and nothing newer.

Material, finish and the warranty behind it

The warranty terms are the clearest signal of how a maker expects a step to age. Rough Country covers the RPT2 and HD2 with a limited lifetime warranty against material and workmanship failures for the original purchaser, with the finish covered for one year; the BA2 carries a 5-year limited warranty. Westin covers polished 304 stainless PRO TRAXX 5 bars for life against defects in materials, workmanship and finish, and the black powder coat over e-coated steel for three years. AMP backs the PowerStep Smart Series for 5 years or 60,000 miles. On a truck in a salt state, the HD2's aluminum or Westin's stainless avoid rust at chips, while a black steel board needs its finish to hold.

Install, wiring and clearance

Every pick here bolts to factory mounting points without drilling, by the makers' descriptions: Rough Country calls all three boards no-drill, bolt-on kits, and Westin says the PRO TRAXX 5 is bolt-on with no drilling on most applications and ships with a mount kit. Plan on a helper to hold the board while you start the bolts, and recheck torque after a week. The AMP PowerStep adds wiring: CARiD lists it with an OBD connector and a wiring harness, and the Smart Series app controls the steps and lights. On clearance, a fixed board or bar is the lowest point on the side of the truck; a power step tucks up out of the way. For a Raptor or any truck that sees rocks, rock sliders protect the rocker better than a step.

#1: AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series Power Running Boards 86151-01A with LED Step Lights — Best power step

AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series Power Running Boards 86151-01A with LED Step Lights, 2015-2022 F-150

Confirm fit on listingRetailers list 86151-01A for 2015-2020; cab not named, confirm with AMP fit tool.
Pros
  • Steps deploy when a door opens and retract when it closes
  • LED step lights with an auxiliary light port
  • App override to hold the steps up or down
  • 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty, made in the USA
  • Listed by part number for the 2015–2020 F-150
Cons
  • CARiD lists it at $1,949.99, about four times the RPT2
  • Needs power, ground and the OBD connector hooked up
  • Retailer pages do not name the cab; confirm yours

AMP Research's PowerStep is the part every other power step gets compared to, and the Smart Series 86151-01A is the version listed for this truck. Motomentum lists it for the 2015–2020 Ford F-150, and the Amazon listing title covers 2015–2022. The steps fold up under the rocker when the doors are closed, so the truck keeps its clearance and clean side, and they drop when a door opens. The Smart Series adds an app, for iOS and Android according to Motomentum, that can hold the steps up or down and switch the built-in LED lights or an auxiliary light set on and off. CARiD lists the construction as aluminum with a black powder coat, an OBD connector and a wiring harness, and a 600 lb load capacity.

The cost is the price and the install. CARiD and Motomentum both list it at $1,949.99, with Motomentum showing a regular price of $2,632.49. Motomentum lists the package at 82 by 13 by 7 in and 54 lb. The warranty is 5 years or 60,000 miles, and both retailers say it is made in the USA. Neither page names a cab, so use AMP's fit tool for a SuperCab or Regular Cab, and if your Limited already has factory power boards, ask the seller before ordering. Note that the 86151-01A is listed for 2015–2020; a 2021+ truck uses a different AMP part.

Who it's for: Owners who want the lowest step and a clean side, and will pay for it and wire it in.

#2: Rough Country RPT2 Running Boards 44005 — Best running board

Rough Country RPT2 Running Boards 44005, 2015-2025 F-150/Lightning/Raptor/Super Duty Crew Cab
Rough Country

Rough Country RPT2 Running Boards 44005, 2015-2025 F-150/Lightning/Raptor/Super Duty Crew Cab

Listed for this truckCrew Cab only; 6.75 in step.
Pros
  • Wide 6.75 in stepping area, per Rough Country
  • Steel board with a no-drill, bolt-on install
  • Limited lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship
  • Listed for 2015–2026 F-150 and 2017–2026 Raptor Crew Cab
  • Fits all bed sizes, per Rough Country
Cons
  • Crew Cab only
  • Finish is covered for one year
  • No published load rating

Rough Country's RPT2 is the flat running board to start with on a 2015–2020 SuperCrew. Rough Country's page lists the 44005 for the 2015–2026 F-150, the 2017–2026 F-150 Raptor and Super Duty, and later the Tremor and Lightning, and says it only fits Crew Cab models and fits all bed sizes. The Amazon listing title names the 2015–2025 F-150, Lightning, Super Duty and Raptor Crew Cab. The board is steel with what Rough Country calls a wide 6.75 in stepping area, the widest step on this page, which is the number that matters if kids or older passengers climb in.

Rough Country lists it at $449.95 with free shipping, describes the install as no-drill, and covers it with a limited lifetime warranty against material and workmanship failures for the original purchaser, with the finish covered for one year. That one-year finish term is the trade-off against the HD2's aluminum or Westin's stainless in a salt state: the structure is covered for life, but chips in the black coating are on you after year one. Rough Country does not publish a load rating for it. For a family SuperCrew on paved roads, the width, the warranty and the price make it the board to buy; the sibling HD2 is the choice if corrosion worries you more than step width.

Who it's for: SuperCrew owners who want the widest flat step with a structural warranty.

#3: Westin 21-534635 PRO TRAXX 5 Oval Wheel-to-Wheel Nerf Bars Black — Best wheel-to-wheel

Confirm fit on listing6.5 ft bed only; confirm bed with Westin fit tool.
Pros
  • Runs from the front wheel well to the rear, adding a step beside the bed
  • Listed for the 2015–2020 F-150 SuperCrew with the 6.5 ft bed
  • 5 in oval tube with injection-molded step pads
  • Bolt-on, no drilling on most applications, mount kit included
  • 30-degree factory-style bends and fully welded domed ends
Cons
  • Bed-length specific; the 5.5 ft SuperCrew needs a different part
  • Black finish has a 3-year warranty
  • We did not read a Westin price for this part number

Westin's 21-534635 is a PRO TRAXX 5 wheel-to-wheel bar, and its Amazon title names exactly this truck: the 2015–2020 F-150 SuperCrew with the 6'5" bed, which is Westin's name for Ford's 6.5 ft box. A wheel-to-wheel bar extends past the rear door to the rear wheel well, so you get a step beside the bed for reaching a toolbox, a tie-down or the front of the box. On a SuperCrew with the longer bed, that is the practical reason to pick it over a cab-length bar.

The bar itself follows Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 spec: a 5 in oval tube, injection-molded polymer step pads with a 5 in wide step area, fully welded domed ends with no exposed bolt heads, and 30-degree factory-style bends at each end. Westin offers the line in polished 304 stainless steel with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects in materials, workmanship and finish, or in e-coated steel with black powder coat covered for three years; this listing is the black pair. Westin says installation is bolt-on with no drilling required on most applications and that a mount kit is included. Westin prints a line-wide price range of $297 to $820 rather than a price for this part, so check the listing. A 5.5 ft SuperCrew needs Westin's shorter wheel-to-wheel number; confirm the bed on Westin's fit tool before ordering.

Who it's for: SuperCrew owners with the 6.5 ft bed who reach into the box often.

Westin

Westin 21-53935 PRO TRAXX 5 Oval Nerf Bars Black, 2015-2026 F-150 & 2017-2026 Super Duty SuperCab

Listed for this truckSuperCab only.
Pros
  • The SuperCab part number, listed 2015–2026 on Westin's page
  • Also lists 2017–2026 Super Duty SuperCab
  • 5 in oval tube with molded step pads
  • Bolt-on, no drilling on most applications, mount kit included
  • Lifetime warranty available in polished stainless (21-53930)
Cons
  • Narrower step than a flat board
  • Black finish has a 3-year warranty
  • No published load rating

SuperCab owners have fewer choices than SuperCrew owners, because most board makers cut Crew Cab parts first. Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 21-53935 is the black SuperCab bar, and Westin's own page lists it for the 2015–2026 F-150 SuperCab alongside the 21-53945 SuperCrew part; the Amazon title adds the 2017–2026 F-250 through F-550 SuperCab. That shared cab fitment across two generations and the Super Duty is a sign Westin cut it to the cab and rocker rather than to one model year.

It is the same bar as the wheel-to-wheel pick, cut to cab length: a 5 in oval tube, injection-molded step pads, fully welded domed ends and 30-degree bends. Westin says it bolts on without drilling on most applications and ships with a mount kit, with injection-molded bracket covers on some applications. The black powder coat over e-coated steel is covered for three years; if you want the lifetime warranty, Westin's polished stainless SuperCab number is 21-53930. Westin lists the PRO TRAXX 5 line at $297 to $820 across all applications and does not print a price for this number, so check the listing. If you prefer a slimmer tube, Westin's PRO TRAXX 4 SuperCab bar, 21-23935, is in our product list.

Who it's for: SuperCab owners, including work trucks, who want a maker-documented bar for their cab.

#5: Rough Country HD2 Aluminum Running Boards SRB151791 — Best aluminum board

Rough Country

Rough Country HD2 Aluminum Running Boards SRB151791, 2015-2025 F-150/Lightning/Raptor/Super Duty Crew Cab, 5 in

Listed for this truckCrew Cab only; aluminum.
Pros
  • One-piece aluminum, which Rough Country calls corrosion-resistant
  • Lighter than a steel board
  • No-drill, bolt-on install
  • Limited lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship
  • Listed for 2015–2026 F-150 and 2017–2026 Raptor Crew Cab
Cons
  • Crew Cab only
  • Finish covered for one year
  • Rough Country does not publish step width or load rating; the listing title says 5 in

Rough Country's HD2 is the pick for a truck that spends winters on salted roads. Rough Country describes it as a durable one-piece aluminum build, strong, lightweight and corrosion-resistant, with cab-length coverage, and lists the SRB151791 for the 2015–2026 F-150, the 2017–2026 Raptor and Super Duty, and the later Tremor and Lightning, Crew Cab only. The Amazon title names the 2015–2025 F-150, Lightning, Super Duty and Raptor Crew Cab with a 5 in wide non-slip step.

Rough Country lists it at $379.95, $70 less than the RPT2, and backs it with the same limited lifetime warranty against material and workmanship failures, including welds, brackets and structural components, for the original purchaser, with the finish covered for one year. The install is described as hassle-free bolt-on with no drilling, and Rough Country posts a five-minute install video on the page. What you give up against the RPT2 is step width: Rough Country does not print a width for the HD2, and the listing title says 5 in, against the RPT2's 6.75 in. Aluminum also dents more easily than steel if a board takes a hit. For a daily-driven SuperCrew where rust is the enemy, it is the better long-term buy.

Who it's for: Crew Cab owners in salt states who want a board that will not rust.

#6: Rough Country BA2 Running Boards 41010 — Best value steel board

Rough Country BA2 Running Boards 41010, 2015-2023 F-150 Crew Cab, 5 in
Rough Country

Rough Country BA2 Running Boards 41010, 2015-2023 F-150 Crew Cab, 5 in

Listed for this truckCrew Cab only; 5-year warranty.
Pros
  • Heavy-duty steel, per Rough Country
  • 5 in stepping area
  • 5-year limited warranty, the longest finish coverage of the three Rough Country boards
  • No-drill, direct bolt-on install
  • Crew Cab, 2015–2026 per Rough Country
Cons
  • Amazon title stops at 2023; fine for this truck, confirm for a newer one
  • Crew Cab only
  • No published load rating or weight

The BA2 is Rough Country's plainer steel board, and it costs the same as the HD2. Rough Country lists the 41010 for the 2015–2026 F-150, 2017–2026 Raptor and Super Duty, Crew Cab models only, with heavy-duty steel construction and a wide 5 in stepping area. The Amazon listing title names the 2015–2023 F-150 Crew Cab with a wide 5 in non-slip step, which covers every year of this generation.

The reason to pick it over the RPT2 is the warranty structure. The BA2 carries a 5-year limited warranty, and Rough Country's page does not split out a shorter finish term the way the RPT2 and HD2 pages do, which makes it the Rough Country board with the longest stated coverage on the coating. The reason to pick the RPT2 instead is step width, 6.75 in against 5 in. Rough Country lists the BA2 at $379.95 with free shipping, and describes a no-drill, direct bolt-on install. It does not publish a load rating, weight or finish type, so ask the seller if any of those matter to you. For an XLT SuperCrew that needs a solid step without a premium look, it is the value buy.

Who it's for: Crew Cab owners who want a steel board with a 5-year warranty for under $400.

How to install a running board on the F-150

  1. Confirm the cab (SuperCrew, SuperCab or Regular Cab) and, for a wheel-to-wheel bar, the bed length. If the truck has factory boards, remove them and their brackets first.
  2. Find the factory mounting points along the rocker and body; pull any plugs or covers the instructions call out.
  3. Bolt the brackets on hand-tight so they can still be shifted.
  4. With a helper, lift the board or bar onto the brackets and start every bolt before tightening any.
  5. Level the step front to rear and in from the body, then torque all bolts to the figures in the instructions.
  6. For a power step, route the harness, connect power and ground, plug in the OBD connector and cycle each door before final tightening.
  7. Recheck every bolt after the first week of driving; brackets settle.

What to avoid

SuperCrew boards on a SuperCab. The step is cut to the cab. Westin's 21-53945 is SuperCrew, 21-53935 is SuperCab, and Rough Country's boards are Crew Cab only.

A title that starts at 2021. Many parts span both generations, but a listing that names 2021 and up only is for the newer truck.

Buying a wheel-to-wheel bar by cab alone. It is bed-length specific. Westin's 21-534635 is for the 6.5 ft SuperCrew bed.

Fixed boards on a trail truck. A board or bar is the lowest point on the side of the truck. A Raptor that sees rocks wants sliders, or a power step that tucks away.

Which running boards fit a 2015–2020 F-150 SuperCrew?

Any board or bar sold for the 2015–2020 F-150 Crew Cab or SuperCrew. On this page that is the Rough Country RPT2, HD2 and BA2 (Rough Country says all three fit Crew Cab models only), the Westin 21-534635 wheel-to-wheel bar (listed for the 2015–2020 SuperCrew with the 6.5 ft bed) and AMP Research's PowerStep Smart Series 86151-01A, which retailers list for the 2015–2020 F-150 without naming a cab. Westin's cab-length PRO TRAXX 5 for the SuperCrew is 21-53945 in black. Read the title for the cab before you order, because a SuperCab bar is shorter and its brackets land in different places.

Do 2015–2020 F-150 running boards fit a 2021+ F-150?

Often, for the same cab. Westin's own page lists the PRO TRAXX 5 part numbers 21-53935 (SuperCab) and 21-53945 (SuperCrew) for 2015–2026, and Rough Country lists the RPT2, HD2 and BA2 for 2015–2026 Crew Cab. The exception on this page is the power step: AMP's Smart Series 86151-01A is listed for 2015–2020, and retailers show a separate part for the 2021+ truck. If a listing names your year, it fits; if it stops at 2020, do not assume the newer truck. Our 2021–2026 F-150 running boards guide covers the 14th gen.

Did the 2015–2020 F-150 come with factory running boards?

Some did. Wikipedia's page on this generation says the Limited trim came standard with power running boards, along with 22 in wheels and the 3.5L EcoBoost. We could not confirm from Ford material which other trims had fixed boards as standard or optional, so look at your truck. If it has boards, the aftermarket set replaces them: you remove the factory boards and brackets first. If it has power boards, ask the seller whether the aftermarket kit is meant to replace them, and whether any factory wiring stays in place.

Are power running boards worth it on an F-150?

They are if someone who rides in the truck has trouble with the step height, or if you want the boards out of sight for a clean look and clearance. AMP's PowerStep Smart Series drops a step when a door opens and folds it up when the door closes, with LED lights and an app to hold the steps up or down. CARiD lists it at $1,949.99, which is about four times a Rough Country RPT2. Rough Country lists its own power running boards for the 2015–2026 F-150 from $1,299.95 and an HT-Series from $999.95, and both are in our product list for comparison.

What is a wheel-to-wheel nerf bar and do I need one?

A cab-length bar ends at the rear door. A wheel-to-wheel bar runs on to the rear wheel well, so there is a step beside the bed. On a 13th-gen F-150 with the 6.5 ft box, that extra step helps when you reach over the side for a toolbox or tie-down. Westin's 21-534635 is the wheel-to-wheel PRO TRAXX 5 listed for the 2015–2020 SuperCrew with the 6.5 ft bed. It is bed-length specific, so a 5.5 ft SuperCrew needs a different part. Confirm your bed on Westin's fit tool before ordering.

Do I need to drill to install running boards on a 2015–2020 F-150?

Not with the parts on this page. Rough Country describes the RPT2, HD2 and BA2 as no-drill, bolt-on installs, and Westin says the PRO TRAXX 5 is bolt-on with no drilling required on most applications and includes a mount kit. The brackets use the factory mounting points on the rocker and body. The one kit that takes real work is the AMP PowerStep, which needs power, a ground and the OBD connector plugged in; CARiD lists it with an OBD connector and a wiring harness.

Steel or aluminum boards for a truck in a salt state?

Both can work; the coating decides. Rough Country's HD2 is one-piece aluminum, which Rough Country calls corrosion-resistant, and aluminum does not rust the way bare steel does. The RPT2 and BA2 are steel with a black finish, and Rough Country covers the finish for one year on the RPT2 and five years on the BA2. Westin's polished 304 stainless PRO TRAXX 5 carries a lifetime warranty on the finish, while the black powder coat version is covered for three years. If roads are salted where you live, rinse the brackets and the underside of the boards through winter.

How much weight can these running boards hold?

Only one maker on this page publishes a figure. CARiD lists a 600 lb load capacity for the AMP PowerStep Smart Series. Rough Country's RPT2, HD2 and BA2 pages do not state a load rating, and Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 page does not either. For a step that carries an adult climbing in, every board here is built for that use, but if you plan to stand on a board to load a roof rack, ask the seller for the rating before you buy.

Do these fit the 2017–2020 F-150 Raptor?

Rough Country lists the RPT2, HD2 and BA2 for the 2017–2026 F-150 Raptor Crew Cab, so a SuperCrew Raptor is covered by those three. The Raptor also came as a SuperCab, and we did not see a SuperCab Raptor named in any listing here, so a SuperCab Raptor owner should ask the seller. Keep in mind the Raptor's wider body and higher ride; a drop-style step or a wide board hangs lower on a truck that goes off-road, where rock sliders are the better choice.

What about the Regular Cab?

We did not find a Regular Cab part on Amazon with a title that names this truck, so there is no Regular Cab pick on this page. Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 page shows only SuperCab and SuperCrew numbers for the 2015–2026 F-150, and Rough Country's three boards are Crew Cab only. Use Westin's or Rough Country's fit tool with your cab selected, or ask the seller for a part number that names the Regular Cab. A SuperCab bar is too long for the two-door body.

FINAL VERDICT

Buy the Rough Country RPT2 for the widest step on a SuperCrew, the HD2 if salt is your problem, Westin's 21-53935 if you have a SuperCab, and AMP's PowerStep Smart Series if someone in the truck needs the lowest step.

Side steps for the 2015–2020 F-150 are easy to fit once you match the cab. Rough Country's RPT2, HD2 and BA2 cover the Crew Cab from 2015 to 2026 with no-drill installs and stated warranties, Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 gives the SuperCab a maker-documented bar and the 6.5 ft SuperCrew a wheel-to-wheel step, and the AMP PowerStep is the premium answer for a truck that carries kids or older riders. Only AMP publishes a load rating, and only the AMP part stops at 2020, so the year check matters most on the power step.

A step also keeps boots off the sill, so the floor liners in the cab stay cleaner, and it is usually the second thing owners add after a tonneau cover. If you have moved on to a 2021–2026 F-150, most of the Westin and Rough Country parts here carry over by part number; see our guide for that generation.

How we chose

We did not install these steps ourselves. We ranked them on the fitment each Amazon listing title states for the 2015–2020 F-150 and its cab, on the specs published by the maker or a retailer (step width, material, finish, warranty, drilling, load rating where one is given) and on price. Rough Country specs come from Rough Country's product pages, Westin specs from Westin's PRO TRAXX 5 page, and AMP Research specs from the CARiD and Motomentum product pages, all read in October 2026. Vehicle facts come from Wikipedia's page on the thirteenth-generation F-Series. Amazon prices move daily, so the button shows the live price.
