Best Rooftop Cargo Boxes for 2020–2025 Hyundai Palisade: 7 Picks for Its Flush Rails

For most Palisade owners, the problem a box solves is simple: with all three rows in use, the luggage doesn't fit. The SkyBox 16 Carbonite handles that at a fair price. Yakima lists it at 16 cu ft and 81 x 36 x 15 in, with a 47 lb box weight, dual-side opening, SuperLatch security and SKS locks, and says it installs with no assembly on Yakima StreamLine bars and most factory or aerodynamic crossbars. It takes skis and boards up to 185 cm and carries a limited lifetime warranty. It was $599 on sale on Yakima's store when we checked, down from $749.

It matches the Palisade's numbers well. The 24 to 34.5 in spread range includes the roughly 32 in spread etrailer gives for the Palisade, and 47 lb of box on 165 lb Thule bars leaves 118 lb for bags; on Hyundai's 220 lb accessory bars there is more headroom, subject to the roof limit in your manual. At 15 in tall it is one of the lower boxes here, which helps on an SUV this tall. The catch is width: at 36 in it fills most of 50 in Thule bars, so choose the NX Skinny if bikes ride up there too.

An eight-seat Palisade on a week-long trip can fill any box, and the Thule Motion 3 XXL is the biggest on this page. Thule lists it at 21 cu ft and 91.3 x 36.2 x 18.1 in, with a 57.2 lb box weight, a 165 lb maximum load and room for skis up to 215 cm. It opens from either side with one hand, locks with SlideLock and clamps on with PowerClick mounts. etrailer lists a 21-13/16 to 36-9/16 in spread and a limited lifetime warranty for the Motion 3 line. Thule lists the box alone at $1,249.95; this Amazon listing bundles it with a GoPack duffel set, so compare prices.

The Palisade suits it better than most SUVs. Thule lists more than 54 13/16 in of front clearance, and the etrailer expert measured about 71 in of hatch clearance on the Palisade, so a forward-mounted XXL should leave the liftgate free; measure yours to be sure. The limit is weight. On 165 lb Thule bars, 57.2 lb of box leaves about 108 lb for gear, and on Hyundai's 220 lb accessory bars about 163 lb, subject to your manual's roof figure. Fill it with sleeping bags, jackets and soft duffels, not coolers.

The Rhino-Rack MasterFit 440 is Rhino-Rack's light, mid-size hard box. Rhino-Rack lists it at 440 L (15.5 cu ft), with exterior dimensions of 76 x 32 x 17 in, an interior of 74 x 30 x 15 in, a 38.6 lb box weight and a 75 kg maximum load. It opens from both sides, locks at three points with the included key, and uses a twist-to-tighten, press-to-lock clamp. Rhino-Rack covers it with a 5-year warranty. Its page doesn't list a price, so check the live listing.

On a Palisade, the numbers line up. Rhino-Rack's required crossbar spacing of 620 to 930 mm (about 24.4 to 36.6 in) includes the roughly 32 in etrailer gives, and at 38.6 lb it leaves about 126 lb of a 165 lb Thule rating for gear. At 76 in long and 32 in wide it leaves room for the liftgate and a little room on 50 in bars. The one fit question is the clamp: Rhino-Rack says it works directly with its Vortex and Euro bars and needs the RUBK-MF kit for its Heavy Duty bars, so confirm it clamps to your Thule, Hyundai or Amazon bars before you order.

A full-width box on 50 in Palisade bars leaves little room for anything else. The SkyBox NX Skinny is Yakima's answer: 84 x 26.5 x 16 in and 12 cu ft, narrow enough to leave roughly 23.5 in of bar for a bike or ski mount beside it. It takes skis and boards up to 195 cm, opens from both sides, and its full metal handles lock both the lid and the mounts. Yakima lists it at $799 (regular $949.99) with SKS locks and a limited lifetime warranty, and says it fits StreamLine and most factory or aerodynamic crossbars.

Weight is the thing to watch, because the bike mount and bike share the same bar rating as the box. At 43 lb, the box plus a roof bike mount and a bike can take a large share of a 165 lb Thule rating before any cargo goes in; Hyundai's 220 lb accessory bars leave more room. Yakima's page doesn't list a crossbar spread for this model, so confirm it against the Palisade's roughly 32 in spread on the listing or with Yakima. The 84 in length suits the Palisade's roughly 71 in hatch clearance if mounted forward.

The DeepSpace 10 is the lightest hard box here and one of the few with a published cargo rating. Yakima lists it at 10 cu ft, 60 x 23 x 16 in and 30.2 lb, with a 100 lb maximum load, integrated tie-down points, a wide opening, an SKS lock and a textured ABS shell. It is made in the USA with a limited lifetime warranty, and Yakima lists it at $649 (regular $869.99). Yakima says it installs in about 10 minutes on existing crossbars.

On a Palisade, its narrow 23 in shell leaves about 27 in of a 50 in Thule bar free for bikes or a kayak, and at 60 in it sits nowhere near the hatch. The fit question is spread. Yakima requires 32 to 46 in between the bars, and etrailer gives the Palisade's spread as about 32 in, which is exactly its minimum. Measure your own bars center to center; if they sit a little closer, slide clamp-on bars apart if your kit allows. At 10 cu ft it is a weekend-bag box, not a ski box.

If your Palisade parks in a garage, the INNO Wedge 660 is the box most likely to clear the door. etrailer lists it at 80 x 33 x 11 in with 11 cu ft, an interior of 72 x 25-5/8 x 8-1/2 in, a 42 lb box weight and a 110 lb maximum load. It fits spreads from 24 to 39 in with tool-free Memory Mount hardware, opens from both sides, and its key can't be removed unless the lid is closed properly. etrailer lists a limited lifetime warranty and a price of $864.97; the Amazon listing says it is made in Japan.

The Palisade's roughly 32 in spread sits near the middle of the INNO's range, so bar position is easy. At 11 in tall it is 4 to 7 in lower than the other hard boxes here, which matters on a tall three-row SUV. The trade-off is volume: 11 cu ft holds 6 to 8 pairs of skis or 4 to 6 snowboards, per etrailer, or a few soft duffels, not a family's bulky camping gear. Its own 110 lb cargo rating sits below either bar rating, so it is the number to pack to.

For one or two road trips a year, a soft carrier gets the third-row luggage out of the cabin for a fraction of a hard box's price. RealTruck lists the Rightline Gear Sport 3 at 18 cu ft and 48 x 36 x 18 in, with welded seams and an SZIP waterproof zipper that Rightline calls 100 percent waterproof with no zipper flap needed. It is made for SUVs and minivans with or without a roof rack, and includes four attachment straps, four car clips and a stuff sack. RealTruck lists it at $139.99 with a one-year warranty, and showed it as temporarily unavailable when we checked.

On a Palisade, crossbars give the straps the best anchor; the flush rails leave no gap to loop a strap under, so without bars the kit's car clips at the door openings do the work. At 48 in long it stays well clear of the liftgate. There is no lock, so empty it overnight, and pack it full so the sides don't flap. Its contents count against the same bar rating and roof limit as any box. When the trip is over, it folds away and the drag goes with it.
