Best Running Boards & Side Steps for 2018–2026 Jeep Wrangler JL: 7 Picks, 2-Door and 4-Door
Seven side steps listed for the JL Wrangler, from Rough Country's bolt-on nerf bars for the 2-door to AMP Research's PowerStep for the 4-door, with drop steps and rock sliders in between. Door count decides fit before brand does, and factory rock rails on some trims change what you can bolt on.

- Count the doors first. The 4-door Unlimited has a 118.4 in wheelbase against 96.8 in for the 2-door (Wikipedia), so steps are sold by door count.
- JL, not JK. The 2018 model year covers both; buy a part that names the JL or 2019 and later.
- Factory rails change the job. Owners describe factory rock rails on the Rubicon; we could not confirm trims from Jeep, so look under the doors.
- Power steps keep clearance. AMP Research and Rough Country kits fold up when the doors close, at a price and with wiring.
- Only Westin publishes a warranty here. 3 years on steel, 5 years on stainless; everything else is confirm-on-listing.
2018–2026 Wrangler JL: what decides step fit
| Variable | Versions | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Doors | 2-door (96.8 in wheelbase) or 4-door Unlimited (118.4 in) | Westin 56-14055 / Rough Country 2-Door kits for the 2-door; 56-140652, 90769A, AMP and Rough Country 4-Door kits for the Unlimited |
| Generation | JK (through 2018) or JL (2018 on) | Titles that say JL; a bare '2018 Wrangler' can mean either |
| Factory rails | Rock rails or tube steps on some trims (not confirmed from Jeep) | Look under the doors; ask the seller whether the kit replaces them |
| Type | Tube step, drop step, slider with step, power step | Power or slider for trails; drop step for easy entry |
| Powertrain | Gas, 4xe, 392 | No title here names or excludes them; confirm with the seller |
| Gladiator JT | Based on the JL, longer body | JL steps do not fit; buy Gladiator parts |
What to look for in Wrangler running boards
Door count sets the length
A Wrangler step is cut to the distance between the wheel wells, and the JL comes in two very different lengths. Wikipedia's JL page lists a 96.8 in wheelbase for the 2-door and 118.4 in for the 4-door Unlimited, with overall lengths of 166.8 in and 188.4 in. That gap is the whole rear door. Every maker sells the two bodies as separate part numbers: Westin's HDX Drop is 56-14055 for the 2-door and 56-140652 (or the earlier 56-14065) for the Unlimited, and Rough Country's titles say 2-Door or 4-Door. A listing that names the Wrangler JL without a door count, such as Rough Country's rock sliders on this page, needs a question to the seller before you order.
JL versus JK, and the 2018 overlap
The JL went into production in November 2017 and its model years run from 2018 to the present, per Wikipedia. The outgoing JK was also sold as a 2018, so a listing that says only '2018 Jeep Wrangler' can be for either body. Westin's catalog shows how different they are: the HDX Drop for the 2007–2018 JK Unlimited is 56-13295, while the JL Unlimited uses 56-14065 and 56-140652. Look for the letters JL or JLU in the title, or a year range that reaches 2019 or later. If the title names the JK, assume it does not fit unless the seller says otherwise.
Factory rock rails and tube steps
Some JL trims leave the factory with rock rails or tube steps already bolted to the body. We could not open a Jeep page that lists them by trim, so we will not state which trims have them. What we can say is that owners on JLwranglerforums describe factory rock rails as standard on the Rubicon, and that a market exists for steps that mount to those rails, such as the MORE Hide-A-Step, without removing them. Rocker-mounted steps like the ones on this page are a different approach: they use the body's mounting points and may need the factory rails off. Look under the doors, then ask the seller which case your kit is.
Fixed or power
A fixed step is the simple route: brackets, a bar, and no wiring. The price is permanent clearance loss, and on a Jeep that is the whole argument. A power step drops when a door opens and folds up against the rocker when it closes, so the Jeep keeps its clearance on the trail. AMP Research is the reference brand, and RealTruck's brand page lists PowerStep models from $1,249.99 to $2,299.99, with LED light kits, pass-through harnesses and plug-and-play conversion kits sold as accessories. Rough Country's kit, described in its listing title as dual-motor with LED powerstep lights, is the lower-priced brand-name option. Both need wiring to power and door signals.
Warranty, finish and load
Only one maker on this page publishes warranty terms we could read. Westin covers the HDX Drop for 3 years on textured-black steel and 5 years on stainless with the same finish, and describes a solid one-piece bar with heavy-duty removable die-stamped foot plates. Nobody on this page publishes a load rating that we read, including Westin. For a Jeep in a salt state, powder coat over steel needs chips touched up; stainless under the same coat costs more and lasts longer. Rough Country and AMP Research warranty terms were not on the pages we could open, so confirm them on the listing before you buy.
| Feature | Look for | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Doors | 2-Door or 4-Door / Unlimited in the title | Titles with no door count |
| Generation | JL or JLU named, or 2019+ in the range | JK parts, or a bare '2018 Wrangler' |

| Mounting | Bolt-on, no drilling, mount kit included | Kits that need drilling, unless they are sliders you want |
| Clearance | Power step or slider for trail use | Drop steps on a rock-crawling Jeep |
| Warranty | Written terms (Westin: 3 or 5 years) | No terms stated |

#1: AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series Power Running Boards with LED Step Lights — Best overall (4-door)

AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series Power Running Boards with LED Step Lights, 2018-2024 Wrangler JLU 4-Door
Confirm fit on listingPower-retractable; wiring required; confirm 2025-2026.- Folds up when the doors close, so the Jeep keeps its clearance
- LED step lights named in the listing title
- Listed for the 2018–2024 Wrangler JLU 4-door
- AMP Research is the reference brand for power steps
- RealTruck sells harness and plug-and-play accessories for the line
- The most expensive type on this page
- Needs wiring to power and door signals
- Title stops at 2024; confirm 2025 and 2026
AMP Research's PowerStep Smart Series is the step to buy if you want the Wrangler to keep its clearance and still have a low step at every door. The listing names the 2018–2024 Jeep Wrangler JLU 4-door and describes power running boards with LED step lights that deploy and retract. When a door opens, the step drops; when it closes, the step folds up against the body, so there is nothing hanging below the rocker on the trail. That is the feature a fixed step cannot match, and on a Jeep it matters more than on a pickup.
AMP Research's own site redirected us to RealTruck's brand page, which lists PowerStep models from $1,249.99 to $2,299.99 and sells an LED light kit, a pass-through harness and a plug-and-play conversion kit as accessories. The product page with the Smart Series specs could not be opened, so we are not quoting a load rating, step width, material or warranty for it. Read those on the listing before you order, and check whether the kit for your model year uses a plug-in harness or wires to the door switches. The title stops at 2024, so 2025 and 2026 owners should confirm the part number with the seller. Owners of the 2-door should look for AMP's separate 2-door part, which we did not find in a listing that named the JL.
Who it's for: 4-door owners who drive the Jeep daily and take it off-road, and will pay for steps that disappear when the doors close.

#2: Westin 56-140652 HDX Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black — Best fixed step (4-door)

Westin 56-140652 HDX Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black, 2018-2026 Wrangler JL Unlimited 4 Door
Listed for this truck3-yr warranty on steel; no drilling on most applications.- Solid one-piece bar
- Heavy-duty removable die-stamped foot plates
- Bolt-on, no drilling on most applications, mount kit included
- 3-year warranty on steel, 5-year on stainless (Westin)
- Listed for 2018–2026 JL Unlimited, the newest range here
- Drop design hangs lowest of the fixed types
- No published load rating
- Priced close to a budget power step
Westin's HDX Drop 56-140652 is the fixed step with the most documentation on this page. The Amazon title lists it for the 2018–2026 Wrangler JL Unlimited 4-door in textured black. Westin's HDX Drop page describes a solid one-piece design with a notched bar, heavy-duty removable die-stamped foot plates for a high-traction step area, and more than 2 extra inches of toe and heel room compared with competitors. Westin lists it as a bolt-on installation with no drilling required for most applications and a vehicle-specific mount kit in the box.
The drop shape is the point. The step pad sits below the bar at each door, so the first step is lower than a straight tube gives, which helps on a stock Unlimited and more on a lifted one. The trade-off is clearance: the pads are the lowest fixed part on the side of the Jeep, so this is a street and gravel step, not a rock slider. Westin lists the HDX Drop line from $529.35 to $891.99 depending on vehicle and finish, with a 3-year limited warranty on textured-black steel and 5 years on stainless with the same finish. The JL part numbers were not in the application table we read, so match the part number on the listing to your doors. Westin's earlier 56-14065, listed to 2025, is in our product list.
Who it's for: Unlimited owners who want a lower step with a written warranty and do not plan to drag the rocker over rocks.

#3: Westin 56-14055 HDX Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black — Best for the 2-door

Westin 56-14055 HDX Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black, 2018-2025 Wrangler JL 2 Door
Confirm fit on listing2-door only; confirm 2026.- Cut for the 2-door's shorter rocker
- Same one-piece bar and foot plates as the Unlimited part
- Bolt-on with a mount kit, no drilling on most applications
- Westin's 3- or 5-year warranty by finish
- Listed for 2018–2025 JL 2-door
- Title stops at 2025; confirm 2026
- Lowest fixed clearance
- Fewer 2-door choices overall, so less to compare it with
Two-door owners have fewer step choices than Unlimited owners, and Westin's HDX Drop 56-14055 is the one with a maker behind it. The Amazon title lists it for the 2018–2025 Wrangler JL 2-door in textured black. It is the short version of the Unlimited bar above, so it carries the same description from Westin: a solid one-piece bar, heavy-duty removable die-stamped foot plates and a bolt-on install with no drilling required for most applications.
On a 2-door the sill is just as high as on the Unlimited and there is only one door per side to step through, so a single low drop pad on each side does most of the work. The bar is short enough that it adds little weight and still gives a toe-hold for reaching the roof when the top comes off. Westin's warranty is the same as the Unlimited part: 3 years on textured-black steel, 5 on stainless. The title stops at 2025, so a 2026 owner should confirm the part number with Westin or the seller. Rough Country's 2-door nerf step bars further down are the budget alternative, with a straight tube that keeps more clearance but a higher step.
Who it's for: 2-door owners who want a brand-name drop step with a written warranty.

#4: Rough Country Power Running Boards — Best value power steps

Rough Country Power Running Boards, Dual-Motor Electric Retractable Side Steps with LED Lights, 2018-2024 Wrangler JL 4-Door
Confirm fit on listingWiring required; confirm 2025-2026 and warranty on listing.- Dual-motor electric retractable steps (listing title)
- LED powerstep lights
- Folds up when the doors close
- Known brand with its own support line
- Listed for 2018–2024 JL 4-door
- Wiring required
- Rough Country's product page could not be opened, so no read specs
- Title stops at 2024; confirm 2025 and 2026
Rough Country's power running boards are the lower-priced brand-name way to get retracting steps on a JL. The Amazon title lists them for the 2018–2024 Jeep Wrangler JL 4-door and describes dual-motor electric retractable side steps with LED powerstep lights. The title does not say where the two motors sit on each board, so read the listing for that and for the deploy time.
We could not open Rough Country's own product page during research, so we are not quoting a step width, material, load rating, deploy time or warranty. Read those on the listing. The questions to settle before you buy are the same as for any power step: whether the harness for your model year plugs in or wires to the door switches, what the warranty on the motors is, and whether the kit expects the factory rock rails to be removed on a Rubicon. For a Jeep that sees snow and salt, the motors and linkages live under the rocker and take the worst of it, so rinse them through winter and let a frozen step thaw rather than forcing it. The title stops at 2024; confirm later years with the seller. Rough Country also lists a 2-door version, which we did not find in a result with a readable title.
Who it's for: 4-door owners who want power steps and would rather spend the AMP Research difference on tires.

#5: Rough Country Contoured Drop Steps 90769A — Best contoured drop step (4-door)

Rough Country Contoured Drop Steps 90769A, Flush Fit Rails with Side Steps, Wrangler JL (2021-2024) & Unlimited (2018-2025) 4-Door
Confirm fit on listingTitle gives two year ranges; confirm your year.- Flush-fit rails with a step at each door (listing title)
- Looks closer to a factory step than a tube
- Listed for the 2018–2025 Unlimited 4-door
- Fixed, so no wiring
- Rough Country part 90769A
- Two year ranges in the title; confirm yours
- No read specs beyond the title
- Steps still hang below the rocker
Rough Country's Contoured Drop Steps, part 90769A, are a fixed step shaped to follow the body. The Amazon title describes flush-fit rails with side steps and lists the Jeep Wrangler JL (2021–2024) and Wrangler Unlimited (2018–2025) 4-door. Read that twice: the title gives two ranges for what is one 4-door body, so match your model year to the listing and ask the seller if yours falls in the gap.
The design puts a formed step under each door instead of a continuous tube, with the rail itself tucked close to the rocker. That gives a factory look and a lower first step at the doors, while the sections between the doors sit higher than a drop nerf bar's pads. It is still a fixed step, so it hangs below the sill all the time. We could not open Rough Country's product page, so material, finish, step size and warranty are not quoted here; the listing should give them. Rough Country also sells rocker sill plates for the Unlimited, which are cladding rather than steps and are not on this page. If your Jeep is a Rubicon, ask whether 90769A mounts with the factory rails removed.
Who it's for: Unlimited owners who want a factory-style step without wiring.

#6: Rough Country Nerf Step Bars — Best budget (2-door)

Rough Country Nerf Step Bars, Bolt-On, 2018-2025 Wrangler JL 2-Door
Confirm fit on listing2-door only; confirm 2026.- Bolt-on install (listing title)
- Straight tube keeps more clearance than a drop step
- Listed for 2018–2025 JL 2-door
- Known brand at the budget end
- Side step pads on the tube
- Higher step than a drop bar
- No read specs beyond the title
- Title stops at 2025
Rough Country's Nerf Step Bars for the 2-door are the budget pick for the short body. The Amazon title lists them for the 2018–2025 Jeep Wrangler JL 2-Door and describes rugged nerf bars with side steps and a bolt-on install. A straight nerf bar sits closer to the rocker than a drop step, so it gives up less clearance, and on a 2-door that is likely to see trails that is a fair trade for a slightly higher step.
The listing is the only source we have for this part, because Rough Country's site could not be opened. Confirm the tube size, the step pad material, the finish and the warranty there. The title stops at 2025, so a 2026 owner should ask. Compared with Westin's HDX Drop 56-14055, this is the step for an owner who wants a bar on the Jeep for less money and does not need the lower pad. Hooke Road's 2-door drop steps, sold as rock-slider-style side steps and listed in our product list, are the other budget route if you want a flat top you can stand on; their title does not call them rated sliders, so ask before you rely on them as armor.
Who it's for: 2-door owners on a budget who want a bolt-on tube step from a known brand.

#7: Rough Country Rock Sliders — Best rock slider

Rough Country Rock Sliders, 2018-2022 Wrangler JL
Confirm fit on listingTitle names no door count; confirm doors and 2023+ with seller.- Built to take rocks, not just feet
- Known brand
- Listed for 2018–2022 Wrangler JL
- Fixed, no wiring
- Flat top doubles as a step
- Title names no door count; confirm before ordering
- Title stops at 2022
- Heavier install than a bolt-on tube
For a Jeep that crawls, a rock slider is the right kind of side step. The Amazon title lists Rough Country's Rock Sliders for the 2018–2022 Jeep Wrangler JL and nothing more, so the two facts you need most, door count and whether it fits a 2023 or later Jeep, have to come from the listing or the seller. We could not open Rough Country's page for this part, so we cannot say which body it is cut for.
A slider is designed to carry the weight of the Jeep when the rocker lands on a rock, so it mounts with heavier brackets than a step bar and is the only type on this page you should treat as armor. The flat top gives a step, higher than a drop bar but usable. On a Rubicon the factory rails already do this job, and owners on JLwranglerforums describe add-on steps that mount to those rails instead of replacing them, so compare that route before buying a second set of sliders. Read the listing for mounting method (body, frame or both), whether drilling is needed, material, and load rating. If the seller cannot confirm the door count and model year, pick a slider whose title does.
Who it's for: Owners who run rocky trails and want protection first and a step second.

How to install a running board on the Wrangler
- Confirm your door count, model year and whether the Jeep has factory rock rails or tube steps; for a Rubicon, ask the seller whether the kit goes on with the rails removed.
- Remove factory steps or rails if the kit replaces them, and clear the body mounting points of plugs or covers per the instructions.
- Bolt the brackets to the mounting points hand-tight; for rock sliders, follow the maker's drilling or nutsert steps if the kit needs them.
- With a helper, set the bar or board on the brackets and start every bolt before tightening any.
- For power steps, route the harness away from heat and moving parts, connect it per the kit instructions, then open and close every door to check deploy and retract.
- Level each side, torque all bolts to the values in the instructions, and recheck them after the first week and after the first trail run.
What to avoid
2-door steps on an Unlimited, or the reverse. The wheelbases differ by 21.6 in (Wikipedia). The brackets will not land.
A bare '2018 Wrangler' listing. That year covers the JK and the JL. Look for JL or JLU in the title.
Ignoring factory rails. Rubicon owners describe factory rock rails; check under the doors before ordering a rocker-mounted step.
Drop steps on a rock-trail Jeep. The pads are the lowest fixed part on the side. Choose a slider or a power step instead.

Do 2-door Wrangler JL side steps fit the 4-door Unlimited?
No. Side steps run between the wheel wells, and the 4-door Unlimited has a 118.4 in wheelbase against 96.8 in for the 2-door, per Wikipedia's JL page. That is more than 21 in of extra rocker, so a 2-door step is far too short and its brackets land in the wrong places. Every maker sells separate parts: Westin's HDX Drop is 56-14055 for the 2-door and 56-140652 for the Unlimited, and Rough Country's listings name 2-Door or 4-Door in the title. Count your doors before you order anything on this page.
Do JK Wrangler running boards fit a JL?
Treat them as different vehicles. The JL replaced the JK for the 2018 model year with a new body, and Westin lists separate HDX Drop parts for the 2007–2018 JK Unlimited (56-13295) and the JL Unlimited (56-14065 and 56-140652). Because 2018 was a model year for both the JK and the JL, a listing that says only '2018 Wrangler' can mean either one. Buy a part whose title says JL, or names 2019 or later, and skip anything that names the JK unless the seller confirms it also fits the JL.
Does my Wrangler already have factory rock rails or side steps?
Look under the doors. We could not open a Jeep page that lists factory rock rails or tube steps by trim, so we will not state which trims have them. Owners on JLwranglerforums describe factory rock rails as standard on the Rubicon and discuss add-on steps that mount to those rails, such as the MORE Hide-A-Step, without removing them. If your Jeep has factory rails or steps, an aftermarket step from this page replaces them or shares their mounting points, so ask the seller whether the kit is designed to go on with the factory rails removed or alongside them.
Are power steps worth it on a Wrangler?
They solve the Wrangler's two competing needs. A fixed step hangs below the rocker all the time, which costs ground clearance and catches rocks. A power step drops when a door opens and folds up against the body when it closes, so the Jeep keeps its clearance on the trail and still gives a low step in the driveway. The cost is money and wiring. RealTruck's AMP Research page lists PowerStep models from $1,249.99 to $2,299.99, and Rough Country's dual-motor kit is the lower-priced brand-name route. If the Jeep never leaves pavement, a fixed drop step does the same job for a fraction of the price.
What is the difference between a drop step, a tube step and a rock slider?
A tube step, or nerf bar, is a round or oval tube that runs along the rocker with step pads on top; it sits close to the body and keeps the most clearance of the fixed types. A drop step bends the tube down at each door so the step pad sits lower, which helps on a stock or lifted Jeep with a high sill. A rock slider is built to take the weight of the Jeep on a rock, so it mounts to the frame or body with heavier brackets and often has a flat top you can step on. Rough Country's Contoured Drop Steps sit between the types: flush rails with a step at each door.
Do these steps fit the Wrangler 4xe and Rubicon 392?
None of the listing titles on this page excludes the 4xe or the 392, and none names them either. The 4xe carries its battery pack under the rear seat and its charge port on the front fender, which does not touch the rocker, but the makers we read do not say so. The 392 has its own exhaust and body cladding. Before you order for either one, ask the seller to confirm the part number against your VIN. Our floor liner guide covers the 4xe's rear floor difference, which is a separate issue.
Do I need to drill to install Wrangler side steps?
Usually not. Westin says the HDX Drop is a bolt-on installation with no drilling required for most applications and ships with a vehicle-specific mount kit. Rough Country's 2-door nerf step listing says bolt-on install. Rock sliders are the exception: some use the body mounting points, others add frame brackets, and a few need holes drilled or nutserts set, so read the instructions for the slider you choose before the Jeep goes on jack stands. Power steps add a wiring job on top of the brackets.
Will running boards hurt my Wrangler's off-road clearance?
Yes, by the amount they hang below the rocker. A drop step is the lowest fixed type because the step pad sits well under the sill. A tube step or a slider with a step keeps more, and a power step keeps all of it when the doors are closed. Approach and departure angles are set by the bumpers, so steps do not change those, but breakover and side clearance both drop. For a Jeep that sees rocks, choose a rock slider rated for impacts or a power step that tucks away.
Can I use Westin's HDX Drop on a Rubicon with the factory rails?
Westin's page we read does not say, and the Amazon titles for 56-14055 and 56-140652 name the JL 2-door and Unlimited without a trim. Owners on JLwranglerforums report that steps made for the factory Rubicon rails mount to the rails themselves, while rocker-mounted steps from other makers go on in place of them. Ask Westin or the seller whether the HDX Drop brackets clear or replace the factory rails on your trim before you buy.
How much weight can these steps hold?
We did not read a published load rating for any of the seven picks. Westin's HDX Drop page describes a solid one-piece bar with heavy-duty die-stamped foot plates but gives no figure. The power step listings describe dual motors but no rating. Ask the seller for a per-side rating before you buy if a heavy rider or a loaded cooler will stand on the step, and never use a running board as a jacking point. Rock sliders are the only type on this page built to carry the Jeep's weight, and only the frame-mounted ones.
Count the doors, check for factory rails, then buy AMP Research's PowerStep if the Jeep goes off-road and you can pay for steps that fold away, Westin's HDX Drop for a fixed step with a written warranty, and Rough Country's 2-door nerf bars on a budget.
The JL's step market splits by door count before anything else, and then by how the Jeep is used. For a 4-door that sees trails and pavement, the PowerStep keeps the clearance and gives the low step, with Rough Country's dual-motor kit as the value version. For a Jeep that stays on roads, Westin's HDX Drop is the best-documented fixed step for either body. Rough Country's contoured drop steps give the Unlimited a factory look, its 2-door nerf bars are the budget tube, and its rock sliders are the choice when the rocker needs armor, once the seller confirms the door count.
Steps keep mud off the sill and out of the cabin, which is the first thing JL floor liners are asked to handle. Most owners pair them with a trailer hitch that clears the tailgate spare, and LED light bars for trail nights. Gladiator owners need their own parts: the JT is based on the JL but has a longer body, so JL steps do not fit it.
How we chose
We did not install these steps ourselves. We ranked them on the fitment each Amazon listing title states for the 2018–2026 Wrangler JL (door count and years), on the specs published by Westin on its own site and by RealTruck on its AMP Research brand page, read in October 2026, and on the step type. Rough Country's product pages could not be opened during research, so every Rough Country detail here comes from the listing title and is marked that way. Owner reports come from a JLwranglerforums thread on steps for Rubicon rock rails. Amazon prices move daily, so the button shows the live price.
