Best Running Boards for 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner: 7 Picks, Limited vs SR5 and TRD Fit
Seven side steps listed for the fifth-generation 4Runner, from drop steps and oval nerf bars to bolt-on rock sliders and power boards. One four-door body ran for fifteen model years, but makers split fit by grade: the Limited, Nightshade, TRD Sport and 2010–2013 SR5 take one set of parts, and the later SR5, Trail, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro take another.

- Find your grade before your brand. Westin, Rough Country, TAC and Hooke Road all split the 2010–2024 4Runner into a Limited group and an SR5 and TRD group, and the parts do not swap.
- The 2010–2013 SR5 is the odd one. Amazon titles put it with the Limited, and SR5 and TRD parts exclude it. Buy only a part whose title names it.
- Look under the doors first. Toyota's 2013 release and 2023 brochure list running boards and automatic running boards on several grades. Ask what has to come off.
- A step is not a slider. Cali Raised's sliders use 1.75 in DOM tube and frame plates. Nerf bars and boards are for feet, not rocks.
- The 2025–2026 4Runner is a different body. Skip listings titled only for 2025 and later, and do not expect old brackets to carry over.
2010–2024 4Runner: which grade takes which parts group
| Grade | Years as listed | Parts group on this page | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited | 2010–2024 | Limited group: Westin 21-23585, TAC aluminum boards, APS boards | Westin fit list; Amazon titles |
| Nightshade | 2020–2021 (Westin, one TAC title); 2019–2022 (another TAC title) | Limited group | Listings disagree on years; confirm yours |
| TRD Sport | 2022–2023 (Westin); 2022–2024 (TAC titles) | Limited group | Westin fit list; Amazon titles |
| SR5 | 2010–2013 | Limited group per Amazon titles; not on Westin's 21-23585 list | Confirm on the listing |
| SR5, SR5 Premium | 2014–2024 (Premium 2018–2024) | SR5 and TRD group: Westin 56-13835, Rough Country, Cali Raised, TAC drop steps, Hooke Road | Westin fit list |
| Trail, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro | Trail 2014–2016 and 2021–2022, TRD Off-Road 2017–2024, TRD Pro 2015–2024 (Westin) | SR5 and TRD group | Westin fit list; the Amazon title says Trail Edition from 2010 |
| Venture, 40th Anniversary | 2020–2021 and 2023 (Westin) | SR5 and TRD group | Westin fit list |
| 2025–2026 4Runner | New generation | None of the parts on this page | Buy listings titled 2025 or later |
What to look for in 4Runner running boards
Grade decides fit: two parts groups in one body
The fifth-generation 4Runner kept one four-door body from 2010 to 2024, and Toyota's 2023 brochure lists one wheelbase, 109.8 in, for every model. Side steps still do not interchange across grades. Westin lists its PRO TRAXX 4 bars 21-23585 for the 2010–2024 Limited, the 2020–2021 Nightshade and the 2022–2023 TRD Sport, and its HDX Drop 56-13835 for the SR5 from 2014, SR5 Premium, Trail, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Venture and 40th Anniversary. Rough Country, TAC and Hooke Road draw the same line. We could not confirm the reason from Toyota. Cali Raised points at two things on the Limited and TRD Sport: the X-REAS suspension and the side moldings. Buy by grade and year first, and by brand second.
The 2010–2013 SR5, Nightshade years and the early Trail
Three groups of owners need an extra check. The first is the 2010–2013 SR5. Amazon titles from Westin and TAC put it with the Limited, and Rough Country, TAC and Hooke Road exclude it from SR5 and TRD parts, but Westin's own fit list for 21-23585 does not name it. The second is the Nightshade. Westin lists 2020–2021, one TAC title says 2019–2022 and another says 2020–2021, while Wikipedia dates the grade from the 2019 model year. The third is the early Trail. The Amazon title for Westin's HDX Drop says 2010–2024 Trail Edition, while Westin's list starts the Trail at 2014. In each case, ask the seller to confirm your exact year before you order.
Factory running boards: what Toyota lists
Some 4Runners left the factory with boards. Toyota's 2013 release says the SR5 and Limited offer newly available automatic running boards. Toyota's 2023 brochure lists running boards among the packages and options for the SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited and TRD Pro, automatic running boards for the TRD Sport and Limited, and a Predator tube step as an accessory. We could not confirm from the text we read which were standard on a grade, or the list for other model years. None of the maker pages we read says whether its part goes on with factory boards in place. Look under the doors, and if boards or power steps are there, ask the seller what must come off.
Tube step, drop step, slider or power board
Four designs do different jobs. A tube step, such as Westin's 4 in oval PRO TRAXX, sits close to the rocker and gives a modest step. A drop step, such as the HDX Drop, hangs a foot plate lower at each door, which is easier to climb onto and the first thing to touch a ledge. A rock slider, such as Cali Raised's Step Edition in 1.75 in DOM tube with frame plates, is armor with a flat top. A power board drops when a door opens and tucks under the rocker when it closes. Toyota's 2020 release gives 9.6 in of ground clearance on four-wheel-drive models. Every fixed step spends some of the space under the rocker, so choose by where the 4Runner goes.
Material, warranty and load rating
Published terms vary more than the designs do. Westin gives 3 years on the powder-coated steel HDX Drop and PRO TRAXX 4, 5 years on the stainless HDX Drop and a lifetime warranty on polished 304 stainless PRO TRAXX bars. Cali Raised gives 2 years against manufacturing defects. Rough Country's and Hooke Road's pages state no term that we read, and the TAC listings were read by title only. Load ratings are rarer still: Rough Country's 660 lb per side is the only figure we read. etrailer's page for the HDX Drop carries reviewer reports of rust within one to two years, so in a salt state stainless or aluminum is worth a look. Ask for any missing number before you buy.

#1: Westin 56-13835 HDX Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black — Best overall (SR5 2014+, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro)

Westin 56-13835 HDX Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black, 2010-2024 4Runner Trail Edition, SR5, TRD, TRD Pro (Exc Limited, Nightshade, TRD Sport)
Confirm fit on listingWestin's fit list starts SR5 and Trail at 2014; 2010-2013 owners confirm with seller.- One-piece steel bar with removable die-stamped foot plates (Westin)
- Two drop steps per side, each 16-1/2 x 4-2/5 in (etrailer)
- Maker fit list by grade and model year
- Bolts to existing holes with no drilling (etrailer)
- 3-year warranty; stainless version carries 5 years
- Does not fit the Limited, Nightshade or TRD Sport
- No published load rating
- Reviewers on etrailer report rust within one to two years
Westin's HDX Drop 56-13835 is the best-documented fixed step for the larger half of the 4Runner range. The Amazon title lists it for the 2010–2024 4Runner Trail Edition, SR5, TRD and TRD Pro and excludes the Limited, Nightshade and TRD Sport. Westin's own fit list is narrower on the early years: SR5 from 2014, SR5 Premium 2018–2024, Trail 2014–2016 and 2021–2022, TRD Off-Road 2017–2024, TRD Pro 2015–2024, Venture 2020–2021 and the 2023 40th Anniversary. Westin does not list a 2010–2013 Trail or SR5, so an owner of one should confirm with the seller.
Westin describes a one-piece steel bar with a notched profile, heavy-duty removable die-stamped foot plates and more than 2 in of extra toe and heel room compared with competitors. etrailer lists the bar at 69 in long with two steps per side, each 16-1/2 in long and 4-2/5 in wide, bolting to existing holes with no drilling. Westin lists the pair at $654.99 and etrailer at $638.78, with a 3-year warranty. The drop steps are the lowest fixed point on the side, so this is a pavement and gravel step. etrailer's page also carries reviewer reports of rust within one to two years and of unclear instructions, and a customer service reply saying rust is not covered. The stainless 56-138352, with a 5-year warranty, is in our product list.
Who it's for: Owners of a 2014–2024 SR5, Trail, TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro who want a lower step with a maker fit list and a written warranty.

#2: Westin 21-23585 PRO TRAXX 4 Oval Nerf Bars Black — Best for the Limited

Westin 21-23585 PRO TRAXX 4 Oval Nerf Bars Black, 2010-2024 4Runner Limited, 2010-2013 4Runner SR5 (Exc Trail Edition)
Confirm fit on listingWestin also lists Nightshade 2020-2021 and TRD Sport 2022-2023; 2010-2013 SR5 is in the title only, confirm.- Made for the Limited, which most 4Runner steps exclude by name
- 4 in oval steel tube with fully welded dome ends
- 4 in wide injection-molded polymer step pads
- No drilling on most applications (Westin)
- 3-year warranty and a maker fit list
- Higher step than a drop bar
- No published load rating
- 2010–2013 SR5 is in the Amazon title but not on Westin's fit list
Limited owners have fewer choices, because most 4Runner steps exclude the grade by name. Westin's PRO TRAXX 4 Oval 21-23585 is the brand-name tube step made for it. The Amazon title lists it for the 2010–2024 4Runner Limited and the 2010–2013 SR5 and excludes the Trail Edition. Westin's fit list names the 2010–2024 Limited, the 2020–2021 Nightshade and the 2022–2023 TRD Sport. It does not name the 2010–2013 SR5 or a 2024 TRD Sport, so owners of those should confirm on the listing.
Westin describes 4 in oval steel tubing, e-coated and finished in black powder coat, with 30 degree factory-style bends, fully welded dome ends and 4 in wide injection-molded polymer step pads. It bolts on with the included mount kit, and Westin says no drilling is required on most applications. Westin lists the pair at $375.00 with a 3-year warranty, and says the bars are designed and engineered in San Dimas, California. A straight oval tube sits closer to the rocker than a drop step, so the step is higher but less hangs down. If your Limited has Toyota's automatic running boards, ask the seller what has to come off before these go on; Westin's page does not say. Westin's polished 304 stainless PRO TRAXX bars carry a lifetime warranty, and the 5 in polished 21-53580 is in our product list.
Who it's for: Limited, Nightshade and TRD Sport owners who want a simple brand-name step with a written warranty.

#3: Rough Country Power Running Boards — Best power steps

Rough Country Power Running Boards, Dual-Motor Electric Retractable Side Steps with LED Powerstep Lights, Toyota 4Runner (2010-2024)
Confirm fit on listingRough Country: not Limited, 2010-2013 SR5 or TRD Sport; wiring required; confirm grade with seller.- Tucks under the rocker when the doors close
- 660 lb weight capacity per side (Rough Country)
- 6 in aluminum boards with an anti-slip textured coating
- LED lights, safe-stop function and an interior bypass switch
- No-drill installation (Rough Country)
- Does not fit the Limited, 2010–2013 SR5 or TRD Sport (Rough Country)
- The most expensive pick here, and it needs wiring
- No warranty term on the page we read
Rough Country's Power Running Boards are the only power-retracting step we found in a listing that names this generation. The Amazon title lists them for the Toyota 4Runner (2010–2024) and describes dual-motor electric retractable side steps with LED lights. Rough Country's page for the kit, PSR621510, adds what the title leaves out. It says the boards do not fit 2010–2024 Limited models, 2010–2013 SR5 models or TRD Sport models, and that models with X-REAS need a controller bracket modification. The Amazon title names no grade, so treat Rough Country's list as the rule.
Rough Country lists 6 in aluminum boards with an anti-slip textured coating, a 660 lb weight capacity per side, LED lights that come on when the boards deploy, a safe-stop function if a board meets a blockage and an interior bypass switch. It calls the install easy and no-drill, and lists the kit at $1,399.95. The page we read gives no warranty term, drop distance or wiring method, so read those on the listing. A power board tucks under the rocker when the doors close, which matters on a 4Runner that Toyota lists at 9.6 in of ground clearance in four-wheel-drive form. The costs are the price, the wiring, and motors and linkages that live under the rocker in salt and slush. Rinse them through winter, and let a frozen step thaw before you force it.
Who it's for: Owners of a 2014–2024 SR5, TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro who want a low step in the driveway and nothing hanging down on the trail.

#4: Cali Raised Bolt-On Rock Sliders — Best rock slider

Cali Raised Bolt-On Rock Sliders, Step Edition, Toyota 4Runner (2010-2024)
Confirm fit on listingCali Raised: not Limited or TRD Sport unless X-REAS and side moldings are removed; confirm finish and kick-out on listing.- 1.75 in DOM tubing with a .120 in wall
- Full frame plates with front and rear clamping support
- Flat 0 degree top that works as a step
- 100 percent bolt-on, no drilling or cutting (Cali Raised)
- Made in the USA with a 2-year warranty
- Not for the Limited or TRD Sport unless X-REAS and side moldings are removed
- About 90 lb a set
- Sits higher than a drop step, so less help for short passengers
Cali Raised's Step Edition is a rock slider you can also step on. The Amazon title lists the bolt-on sliders for the Toyota 4Runner (2010–2024). Cali Raised's page describes 1.75 in DOM tubing with a .120 in wall, a full frame plate design with front and rear clamping support, gusseted construction and Grade 8 bolts. The Step Edition has a flat, 0 degree profile with top plates, where the company's Trail Edition is angled up at 25 degrees for more clearance. Cali Raised quotes about 45 lb per side, or 90 lb a set.
The company calls the install 100 percent bolt-on with no drilling or cutting and estimates 1.5 to 2 hours. It says the sliders suit both KDSS and non-KDSS models, are not compatible with Limited or TRD Sport models unless X-REAS and the side moldings are removed, and that 2010–2013 4Runners need a trim panel at the rocker taken off. Prices on Cali Raised's site start at $909.99, with options for a kick-out, filler plates and a raw, powder coat or bed liner finish. It lists a 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects, US manufacture and a lead time of up to four weeks. A slider sits higher than a drop step, so short passengers get less help from it. The Amazon title names no grade and no options, so confirm on the listing which finish and kick-out you are buying.
Who it's for: SR5, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro owners who run rocky trails and want protection first and a step second.

#5: TAC 4 in Drop Side Steps Running Boards — Drop-step alternative

TAC 4 in Drop Side Steps Running Boards, 2010-2024 Toyota 4Runner (Exclude 22-24 TRD Sport, 20-21 Nightshade Edition, 10-24 Limited, 10-13 SR5)
Confirm fit on listingRead by title only; confirm material and warranty on listing.- Drop steps for a lower first step
- Title names 2010–2024
- Exclusions are spelled out by grade and year in the title
- Does not exclude the 2014–2024 SR5, TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro
- Fixed step, so no wiring
- Read by listing title only; no maker specs
- No warranty or load rating that we read
- Drop steps hang lowest of the fixed types
TAC's 4 in drop side steps are the second drop step we found titled for the SR5 and TRD grades. The Amazon title lists them for the 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner and excludes the 2022–2024 TRD Sport, the 2020–2021 Nightshade Edition, the 2010–2024 Limited and the 2010–2013 SR5. That is the same split Westin's fit lists show, written out by year, which makes the title easy to check against your own grade.
The title is the only source we have for this part. We did not open a TAC page, so we are not quoting a material, finish, step size, load rating or warranty. The 4 in in the name is the title's own figure, and the title does not say whether it measures the drop or the step, so read the listing for that. Before you order, check the listing for the number of brackets per side, whether drilling is needed and the warranty term. Compared with Westin's HDX Drop, you give up a maker fit list and a written warranty that we could read. Compare the live price on the button with Westin's before you decide. Drop steps hang lowest of the fixed types, so this is a step for a 4Runner that stays on pavement and graded roads. A 2010–2013 SR5 owner is excluded by the title and should look at the Limited group parts.
Who it's for: Owners of a 2014–2024 SR5 or a TRD Off-Road who want a drop step and will check the listing for the details the title leaves out.

#6: TAC Running Boards Aluminum Black Side Steps — Flat board for the Limited
TAC Running Boards Aluminum Black Side Steps, Toyota 4Runner 2010-2024 Limited, 2010-2013 SR5, 2019-2022 Nightshade Edition, 22-24 TRD Sport
Confirm fit on listingRead by title only; confirm Nightshade year, width and warranty on listing.- Flat board, the widest kind of step
- Titled for the Limited, Nightshade, TRD Sport and 2010–2013 SR5
- Aluminum, so no rust
- Title names 2010–2024 for the Limited
- Fixed step, so no wiring
- Read by listing title only; no maker specs
- Nightshade years differ between listings
- No warranty or load rating that we read
A flat running board gives the widest place to put a foot, and this TAC set is the one we found titled for the Limited group. The Amazon title lists it for the Toyota 4Runner 2010–2024 Limited, the 2010–2013 SR5, the 2019–2022 Nightshade Edition and 2022–2024 TRD Sport models, and describes aluminum black side steps. Note the Nightshade years. This title says 2019–2022, TAC's drop-step title says 2020–2021 and Westin's fit list says 2020–2021. If you own a Nightshade, ask the seller to confirm your year.
As with TAC's drop steps, the title is our only source. Aluminum and black are the title's words. Width, load rating, bracket design, drilling and warranty were not read and should be confirmed on the listing. Aluminum does not rust, though road salt can still corrode it, so rinse the boards in winter. A flat board suits the Limited's role: Toyota's 2020 release says the Limited places extra focus on everyday comfort and pavement handling. A board also gives kids and older passengers an easier target than a tube. If your Limited has Toyota's automatic running boards, ask the seller what must be removed first. APS's 6 in boards titled for the 2010–2024 Limited are in our product list as an alternative, and Westin's PRO TRAXX 4 is the pick if you want a maker fit list and a written warranty.
Who it's for: Limited owners who want a flat board for family use and will confirm width and warranty on the listing.

#7: Hooke Road Rock Sliders Tube Side Door Armor Rocker Guard Rails — Budget rocker guard

Hooke Road Rock Sliders Tube Side Door Armor Rocker Guard Rails, 2010-2024 Toyota 4Runner 5th Gen (Exclude Limited, Nightshade, TRD Sport & 10-13 SR5)
Confirm fit on listing0.06 in wall tube per Hooke Road HE.9801-S; no load rating; confirm part number on listing.- Steel tube along the rocker for far less than a frame-plate slider
- Bolt-on with factory bolts, no drilling (Hooke Road)
- Textured black powder coat with e-coating inside
- About 39 lb, per Hooke Road's page
- Title names 2010–2024 and lists its exclusions
- 0.06 in tube wall, half of Cali Raised's .120 in
- No load rating or warranty term on the page we read
- Only a small step, per a reviewer on Hooke Road's page
Hooke Road's tube sliders are the low-cost way to put steel along the rocker of an SR5 or TRD grade. The Amazon title lists the rock sliders for the 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner 5th Gen and excludes the Limited, Nightshade, TRD Sport and 2010–2013 SR5. Hooke Road's own page for its tube sliders, HE.9801-S, carries the same exclusions in its title. We could not confirm that the Amazon listing is that exact part number, so compare the photos and the part number on the listing.
Hooke Road's page lists steel tubing 1.9 in across with a 0.06 in wall, a textured black powder coat with e-coating inside, a weight of about 39 lb and a price of $289.99. It says the sliders bolt on with no drilling, using factory bolts and stock connecting points. Set that beside Cali Raised's .120 in wall DOM tube and frame plates: the Hooke Road tube has half the wall thickness, and its page does not say whether the 39 lb is for one side or the pair. The page gives no load rating and no warranty term. Treat it as a rocker guard and a small step for gravel and light trails, not as armor to drop the 4Runner's weight on. A reviewer on Hooke Road's page calls it a small step, so do not expect a full foothold. Hooke Road's 7 in drop-down step version is in our product list.
Who it's for: SR5 and TRD Off-Road owners who want a guard and a toe-hold for gravel roads without paying for frame-plate sliders.

How to install a running board on the 4Runner
- Write down your grade and model year, look under the doors for factory running boards, and check both against the listing title and the maker's fit list.
- If factory boards, power steps or rocker trim are in the way, remove them only as the new part's instructions describe. Cali Raised says 2010–2013 models need a trim panel at the rocker removed for its sliders.
- Find the mounting points the kit uses and clean the threads. etrailer describes the Westin HDX Drop as bolting to existing holes, and Hooke Road says its sliders use factory bolts and stock connecting points.
- Hang the brackets hand-tight, then lift the bar, board or slider on with a helper and start every bolt before tightening any. Cali Raised lists its sliders at about 45 lb per side.
- For power boards, mount the motors and linkages, route the harness away from heat and moving parts, connect it as the kit instructions say, then open and close each door to check that the boards deploy and retract.
- Level both sides, torque every bolt to the figures in the instructions, and recheck them after the first week and after the first trail day.
What to avoid
SR5 and TRD parts on a Limited, or the reverse. Westin, Rough Country, TAC and Hooke Road all list the Limited, Nightshade and TRD Sport apart from the other grades. Buy the part that names yours.
Trusting a title that names no grade. The Amazon titles for Rough Country's power boards and Cali Raised's sliders say only 4Runner and 2010–2024. Their own pages exclude the Limited and TRD Sport, and Rough Country's also excludes the 2010–2013 SR5.
2025–2026 listings on a 2010–2024 body. The 2025 4Runner is a new generation and makers sell separate parts for it. Check that the title names a year from 2010 to 2024.
Using a step as armor or a jack point. Nerf bars and boards are built for feet. If the rocker will meet rocks, buy a slider with frame plates, and jack only where the maker's instructions allow.

Do running boards for a 4Runner SR5 fit the Limited?
Usually not. Makers and sellers split the 2010–2024 4Runner into two groups. Westin lists its PRO TRAXX 4 bars 21-23585 for the 2010–2024 Limited, the 2020–2021 Nightshade and the 2022–2023 TRD Sport, and its HDX Drop 56-13835 for the SR5 from 2014, the Trail, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Venture. Rough Country says its power boards do not fit the Limited, the 2010–2013 SR5 or the TRD Sport. TAC and Hooke Road print the same exclusions in their Amazon titles. Find your grade and model year in the title or in the maker's fit list before you order anything.
Why is the 2010–2013 SR5 grouped with the Limited?
We could not confirm the reason from Toyota. What we can report is how the parts are listed. Amazon titles for Westin's PRO TRAXX bars and TAC's aluminum boards put the 2010–2013 SR5 with the Limited, and Rough Country, TAC and Hooke Road exclude the 2010–2013 SR5 from parts made for the later SR5 and the TRD grades. Westin's own fit list for the HDX Drop starts the SR5 at 2014. Wikipedia dates the 4Runner's facelift to the 2014 model year. If you own a 2010–2013 SR5, treat it as its own case and buy only a part whose title names it.
Did my 4Runner come with factory running boards?
It may have. Toyota's 2013 release says the SR5 and Limited offer newly available automatic running boards. Toyota's 2023 brochure lists running boards among the packages and options for the SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited and TRD Pro, and automatic running boards for the TRD Sport and Limited. We could not confirm from the text we read which of these were standard on a given grade, or the list for every model year. Look under the doors. If boards are already there, ask the seller whether the new part goes on in their place and what has to come off first.
Do 2010–2024 4Runner running boards fit the 2025–2026 4Runner?
No. The 2025 4Runner is a new generation. Wikipedia says it was revealed on April 9, 2024 and is based on the same body-on-frame platform as the Tacoma, and makers sell separate parts for it. Rough Country, for example, has nerf steps titled for the 2025–2026 4Runner. Every pick on this page names the 2010–2024 body. If you are shopping for the new model, use a listing that names 2025 or later, and do not assume the brackets from the old body carry over. The reverse also holds: skip any listing whose title names only 2025 and later.
Are power running boards worth it on a 4Runner?
They cost the most and they solve a real conflict. Toyota's 2020 release gives 9.6 in of ground clearance on four-wheel-drive models, and a fixed step hangs below the rocker all the time. A power board drops when a door opens and tucks under the rocker when it closes. Rough Country lists its dual-motor kit at $1,399.95 on its own site, with 6 in aluminum boards, LED lights and a 660 lb rating per side. That is more than twice Westin's list price for the HDX Drop. Rough Country says the kit does not fit the Limited, the 2010–2013 SR5 or the TRD Sport, so check your grade first.
Running boards or rock sliders: which does a 4Runner need?
It depends on what the rocker panel will meet. A running board or nerf bar is a step. It bolts on with light brackets and is not built to carry the vehicle. A rock slider is armor. Cali Raised's Step Edition uses 1.75 in DOM tubing with a .120 in wall and full frame plates, weighs about 90 lb a set, and has a flat top so it also works as a step. For pavement and gravel, a step is cheaper and lower to climb on. For rocky trails, a slider protects the rocker and gives a step that sits higher. Never jack the vehicle on a running board.
Do I need to drill to install 4Runner running boards?
Not for the parts whose maker pages we read. Westin says the HDX Drop and PRO TRAXX 4 need no drilling on most applications, and etrailer describes the HDX Drop 56-13835 as bolting to existing holes. Rough Country calls its power boards an easy no-drill installation. Cali Raised describes its sliders as 100 percent bolt-on with no drilling or cutting, and Hooke Road says its tube sliders use factory bolts and stock connecting points. Power boards still need wiring, and Cali Raised says 2010–2013 models need a trim panel at the rocker removed first. For the two TAC listings, confirm on the listing.
Do rock sliders fit a 4Runner with KDSS or X-REAS?
Cali Raised says its Step Edition sliders are compatible with both KDSS and non-KDSS models. Toyota's 2020 release lists KDSS as available on the TRD Off-Road. X-REAS is the other system to know. Toyota's 2020 release calls it exclusive to the Limited, and the 2023 brochure lists it on the TRD Sport and Limited. Cali Raised says its sliders are not compatible with Limited or TRD Sport models unless X-REAS and the side moldings are removed, and Rough Country says models with X-REAS need a controller bracket modification for its power boards. Hooke Road's page mentions neither system, so ask the seller.
How much weight can 4Runner running boards hold?
Only one pick publishes a figure that we read: Rough Country rates its power boards at 660 lb per side. Westin's pages for the HDX Drop and PRO TRAXX 4 give no load rating, and neither does etrailer's page for the HDX Drop. Cali Raised and Hooke Road publish tube sizes but no step rating. The two TAC listings were read by title only. If a heavy rider will use the step, or you plan to stand on it to load the roof, ask the seller for a per-side rating in writing before you order, and do not treat a missing number as a high one.
Will steel side steps rust on a 4Runner?
They can. Westin's HDX Drop 56-13835 is powder-coated steel. etrailer's page for it carries reviewer reports of rust within one to two years and a customer service reply saying the 3-year warranty does not cover rust. Westin also sells a stainless version, 56-138352, with a 5-year warranty. Its PRO TRAXX 4 bars are e-coated steel under black powder coat with a 3-year warranty, and polished 304 stainless PRO TRAXX bars carry a lifetime warranty. In salt states, rinse the steps and brackets through winter and touch up chips early. Aluminum boards do not rust, though road salt can still corrode them.
Find your grade first, then buy Westin's HDX Drop for a 2014–2024 SR5, Trail, TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro, Westin's PRO TRAXX 4 for a Limited, Rough Country's power boards if you want the step to disappear, and Cali Raised's Step Edition sliders if the rocker will meet rocks.
On the fifth-generation 4Runner, the grade on the tailgate decides which side steps fit, and brand comes second. The Limited, Nightshade and TRD Sport share one group of parts, the later SR5 and the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro share another, and the 2010–2013 SR5 needs a title that names it. Inside each group the choice follows use. Westin's two bars carry maker fit lists and written warranties. Rough Country's power boards keep the clearance and publish the only load rating here. Cali Raised's sliders are the real armor, Hooke Road's tube is a light guard, and TAC covers a second drop step and the Limited's flat board, with details and prices to confirm on the listing.
A step also gives you somewhere to stand when you load the roof. If that is the next job, our 4Runner roof rack guide starts with what the roof already carries, and the cargo box guide ranks boxes by weight because the roof figure is low. Steps keep mud off the sill too, which helps the floor liners. If you have moved on to a 2025–2026 4Runner, none of these parts carry over, so shop from that generation's listings.
How we chose
We did not install these parts ourselves. We chose them by type, so that tube bars, flat boards, drop steps, rock sliders and power boards are all covered, and ranked them on the fitment each Amazon listing title states for the 2010–2024 4Runner, on the fit lists and specs that Westin, Rough Country, Cali Raised and Hooke Road publish on their own sites, and on etrailer's page for the Westin HDX Drop, all read in October 2026. The two TAC picks were read by listing title only, and the text says so. We did not open an owner forum for this page, so it cites no owner reports beyond the reviewer notes on etrailer's page. Vehicle facts come from Toyota's 2013 and 2020 press releases, Toyota's 2023 brochure and Wikipedia. Where we could not confirm a detail, the text says so. Amazon prices move daily, so the button shows the live price.
