Best Running Boards for 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma: 7 Picks for Double Cab and Access Cab
Seven side steps listed for the 3rd-generation Tacoma: stainless drop steps, a galvanized flat board, a power board, a rock slider, a tri-tube bar, an Access Cab bar and a wheel-to-wheel step. The fit rule is simple. The step must be cut for your cab, and a wheel-to-wheel step must also match your bed.

- The cab decides the part. This generation has two cabs, the Access Cab and the four-door Double Cab. Six picks here are Double Cab parts and one is an Access Cab bar.
- Many parts span 2005–2023, but not all. Westin, Tyger and TAC list their fixed steps for 2005–2023. RealTruck's power board and Westin's wheel-to-wheel bar are listed for 2016–2023 only.
- The 2024 Tacoma takes different part numbers. Westin and Go Rhino listings show separate parts for 2024 and later, so do not buy across that line.
- Factory steps are unconfirmed. Toyota's 2023 release does not mention running boards on any grade. Look under the rocker before you order.
- Sliders protect and boards step. Westin's XTS is the rock slider here. Only Tyger publishes a weight rating: 500 lb per side.

What to look for in Tacoma running boards
Cab first: Double Cab or Access Cab
Toyota's 2023 release describes two cab types, the extended Access Cab and the four-door Double Cab, and Wikipedia lists no regular cab for this generation. A cab-length step is cut to the door opening, and its brackets are spaced for that cab, so the two do not swap. Tyger says so on its Star Armor page: the Double Cab part only fits the cab with four full-size doors, not the Access Cab with two full-size front doors and two rear-hinged doors. Six of the seven picks here are Double Cab parts, and TAC's 4.25 in bar is the Access Cab pick. Count the doors, then read the title for the cab name. If a title only says Tacoma, as Tyger's does, check the part number against the maker's page or ask the seller.
Year range: 2005–2023, 2016–2023 and the 2024 break
Many step listings for this truck span 2005–2023, which takes in the 2005–2015 Tacoma as well. We state only what each maker's fit list shows. Westin lists the HDX Stainless Drop 56-127752 and the XTS slider 42-14205 for the 2005–2023 Double Cab, Tyger lists Star Armor for 2005–2023, and TAC lists its Access Cab bar for 2005–2023. Two picks start later: RealTruck's VoltStep and Westin's wheel-to-wheel HDX Drop are listed for 2016–2023 only. The 2024 truck is a separate fit. Westin and Go Rhino listing titles show different part numbers for it, such as Westin's Outlaw 20-12775 for 2005–2023 against 20-12785 for 2024–2026. Buy by the fit line for your model year, not by what fit a friend's older truck.
Step type against clearance
A tube or armor-style bar such as Tyger's Star Armor sits close to the rocker and gives a narrower step. A flat board such as Go Rhino's RB20, 7.5 in wide at the front per RealTruck, gives the whole foot a platform. Drop steps such as Westin's HDX hang a plate below the bar for a lower first step, which helps on a lifted truck and also makes the plate the lowest point on the body side. A rock slider such as Westin's XTS is built to guard the rocker and adds a small bolt-on step plate. A power board such as RealTruck's VoltStep folds away when the doors close. On a Tacoma that leaves pavement, decide how much side clearance you can give up, then think about who climbs in.
Material, finish and warranty
The base metal decides how a step ages. Westin's HDX Stainless Drop uses 401 stainless steel under its powder coat and carries a 5-year limited warranty that includes the finish. Go Rhino's RB20 is galvanized 16-gauge steel with a limited lifetime structural warranty and a 5-year finish warranty, per RealTruck. RealTruck's VoltStep is aluminum alloy with a limited 5-year warranty. Westin's steel XTS slider and wheel-to-wheel HDX Drop carry 3 years, and Tyger gives US customers 3 years on its E-coated carbon steel Star Armor. TAC states a one-year warranty against rust on its coated mild steel bar. In a salt state, stainless, galvanized steel or aluminum is worth paying for. On coated steel the brackets rust first, so rinse them after winter drives.
Mounting, drilling and install time
Every fixed pick here is sold as a bolt-on. Westin says the HDX Stainless Drop and the XTS slider need no drilling, and that the wheel-to-wheel bar needs none on most applications. RealTruck lists the RB20 with no drilling, trimming or modifications. Tyger says Star Armor mounts to the rocker panel with no drilling in about 20 minutes, which is the maker's figure and assumes clean threads and a helper. TAC includes hardware and instructions. The power board is different. RealTruck says no drilling is required but recommends professional installation, because the kit adds wiring, door switches and a bypass switch. Plan on a second person for any bar, since the Tyger kit alone weighs 78.2 lb. If the truck has steps already, they come off first.
| Feature | Look for | Avoid |

| Base metal | Stainless, galvanized steel or aluminum in salt states | Coated mild steel that never gets rinsed |
| Mounting | Bolt-on with a vehicle-specific bracket kit and no drilling | Kits that need new holes to fit |
| Clearance | A slider or a power board for trail use | Drop steps on a truck that sees rocks |
| Warranty | A stated term: 3 to 5 years, or lifetime structural | No terms stated anywhere |

#1: Westin 56-127752 HDX Stainless Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black — Best overall

Westin 56-127752 HDX Stainless Drop Nerf Bars Textured Black, 2005-2023 Tacoma Double Cab
Listed for this truckDouble Cab only; no drilling and 5-year warranty (Westin).- 401 stainless steel under a textured black powder coat (Westin)
- Stainless steel step pads on a drop plate at each door
- Bolt-on to the rocker panel with no drilling (Westin)
- 5-year limited warranty that covers materials, workmanship and finish
- One part number for the 2005–2023 Double Cab
- Westin lists it at $891.99 a pair, about twice the Tyger
- Drop plates are the lowest point on the body side
- No published weight rating on the page we read
Westin's HDX Stainless Drop is the step to start with on a Double Cab. The listing title names part 56-127752 for the 2005–2023 Tacoma Double Cab in textured black, and Westin's own page gives the same fit line: 2005–2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Pickup. Westin describes a one-piece bar with a hexagon tube shape, made from 401 stainless steel under a textured black powder coat, with stainless steel step pads that it calls rust resistant. The drop plates sit below the bar at each door, and Westin says the step area has over 2 added inches of toe and heel room compared with its competitors.
Stainless under the coating is the reason it leads this page. On a coated carbon steel bar, a stone chip is where rust starts. Here the metal under the chip is stainless. Westin backs that with a 5-year limited warranty against defects in materials, workmanship and finish, against 3 years on its steel XTS and wheel-to-wheel parts. The install is a bolt-on to the rocker panel with a vehicle-specific mount kit and no drilling, per Westin.
Two cautions. Westin lists it at $891.99 a pair, which is roughly twice the Tyger Star Armor. And drop plates are the lowest part of the body side, so a truck that sees rocks is better served by the XTS slider below. Westin publishes no weight rating on the page we read. Access Cab owners need a different part, because this one is cut for the four-door cab.
Who it's for: Double Cab owners who want a lower first step, a stainless bar and the longest Westin warranty on this page.

#2: Go Rhino 69442987T RB20 Running Boards with Mounting Brackets Kit — Best flat running board

Go Rhino 69442987T RB20 Running Boards with Mounting Brackets Kit, Double Cab Only, Toyota 05-23 Tacoma
Confirm fit on listingDouble Cab only; title does not name the finish, confirm on the listing.- 7.5 in wide at the front and 6.5 in at the rear (RealTruck)
- Galvanized 16-gauge, zinc-coated steel
- No drilling, trimming or modifications (RealTruck)
- Limited lifetime structural warranty and 5-year finish warranty
- Sold as a kit with the Tacoma mounting brackets
- A wide board costs more side clearance than a tube
- Title does not name the finish; check the listing
- RealTruck's RB20 page gives no weight rating and no Tacoma-specific price
If you want a flat platform and not a tube, Go Rhino's RB20 is the documented choice. The listing title reads 69442987T RB20 Running Boards with Mounting Brackets Kit, Double Cab Only, for the Toyota 05-23 Tacoma. That is a full kit: the boards plus the Tacoma brackets. RealTruck describes the RB20 line as galvanized 16-gauge, zinc-coated steel with a step that is 7.5 in wide at the front and 6.5 in at the rear, finished in a textured powder coat or a protective bedliner coating.
A board that wide is the easiest step on this page for children and older passengers, because the whole foot lands on it. The galvanized layer under the coating is the second reason to pick it. A chip exposes zinc, not bare steel. RealTruck lists the install as a bolt-on with no drilling, trimming or modifications, and the line carries a limited lifetime structural warranty plus a 5-year finish warranty against red rust, peeling, flaking and cracking.
Some things we could not read. RealTruck's RB20 page gives a line price, from $519.99, with no Tacoma-specific price and no weight rating, and the listing title does not name the finish. Check the listing for all three. A full-width board also puts a wide shelf under the rocker, so it costs more side clearance than a tube. Go Rhino sells the 2024 Tacoma kit under a different number, 69443280, so do not order this one for the newer truck.
Who it's for: Double Cab families and road-focused owners who want the widest, flattest step with a galvanized base.

#3: RealTruck Volt Power Running Boards — Best power step

RealTruck Volt Power Running Boards, Toyota Tacoma (2016-2023) Double Cab
Confirm fit on listingPower board; title carries no part number, RealTruck sells VoltStep 20442987PC for 2016-2023; confirm part number on the listing.- Tucks away when the doors close, so side clearance stays
- 6 in wide aluminum alloy stepping surface (RealTruck)
- Dual electric motors on each board
- Integrated LED lighting and an interior bypass switch
- No drilling required; limited 5-year warranty
- RealTruck lists it at $1,399.99, the highest price here
- RealTruck recommends professional installation
- No weight rating in the text we read, and the Amazon title carries no part number
This is the one power-retractable board we found whose listing title names this generation: RealTruck Volt Power Running Boards for Toyota Tacoma (2016 - 2023) Double Cab. RealTruck's own store sells its VoltStep Electric Running Boards for the 2016–2023 Tacoma as part 20442987PC, and that page is where the specs below come from. The Amazon title carries no part number, and we could not confirm that the listing is that exact part, so match the part number on the listing before you order.
RealTruck describes a lightweight, high-strength aluminum alloy board with a textured black powder coat, molded nylon end caps and a 6 in wide stepping surface. Each board has dual electric motors. Magnetically actuated door switches deploy the board when a door opens, an interior bypass switch overrides it, and integrated LED lighting lights the step. RealTruck says no drilling is required and includes a vehicle-specific mounting kit, wiring and instructions, but it recommends professional installation. The warranty is a limited 5-year term, and RealTruck lists the part at $1,399.99.
The case for a power board on a Tacoma is clearance. With the doors shut the step is tucked up, so nothing fixed hangs under the rocker on a trail. The costs are the price, the wiring, and motors that a fixed bar does not have. RealTruck's page gives no weight rating in the text we read, and its fit line starts at 2016, so this is not a 2005–2015 part. We found no power board whose title names the Access Cab.
Who it's for: Double Cab owners who want a full step for passengers and stock side clearance with the doors shut.

#4: Westin 42-14205 XTS Rock Slider — Best rock slider

Westin 42-14205 XTS Rock Slider, 2005-2023 Tacoma Double Cab
Listed for this truckRock slider with bolt-on step plate; no drilling (Westin).- 12-gauge steel channel with a 1-3/4 in, .120 in wall round tube (Westin)
- Custom profile that follows the truck's contour
- Bolt-on step plate with a polyurea texture-coated grip surface
- Bolt-on with no drilling; hardware and brackets included
- 3-year warranty; designed and engineered in San Dimas, California
- Westin lists it at $1,034.99
- Smaller step than a board or drop step
- No weight rating or mounting detail in the text we read
A rock slider is built to protect the rocker panel first and to be a step second. Westin's XTS is the slider on this page with a maker spec sheet behind it. The listing title names part 42-14205 for the 2005–2023 Tacoma Double Cab, and Westin's page repeats that fit line. Westin describes 12-gauge steel channel combined with a round tube of 1-3/4 in diameter and .120 in wall, a custom profile that follows the truck's contour, and a textured black powder coat over an electrostatic base coat.
The step is a bolt-on plate with a polyurea texture-coated grip surface, so you still get a place to put a boot. Westin says the slider protects the rocker panels from potential damage, is reinforced for strength, and installs as a bolt-on with no drilling, with hardware and mounting brackets included. It is designed and engineered in San Dimas, California, and carries a 3-year warranty. Westin lists it at $1,034.99.
What Westin's page does not give, in the text we read, is a weight rating, the product weight, or whether the brackets bolt to the frame or to the body. That matters, because a slider is only as strong as its mounts. Read the instructions before you rely on it on rocks, and do not treat it as a jacking point unless Westin says so. Cali Raised also sells bolt-on Trail Edition rock sliders listed for the 2005–2023 Tacoma. That listing is in our product list, but we could not read its specs.
Who it's for: Double Cab owners who drive rocky trails and want rocker protection with a small step.

#5: Tyger Auto Star Armor — Best value

Tyger Auto Star Armor, 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma
Confirm fit on listingTitle names no cab; Tyger lists TG-AM2T20048 for Double Cab only; confirm part number and cab on the listing.- Tyger quotes 500 lb per side, the only rating published here
- 2 in carbon steel in a tri-tube structure
- Dual-stage E-coat and textured black powder finish
- Bolt-on to the rocker panel, no drilling, about 20 minutes (Tyger's figure)
- 3-year warranty for US customers
- Amazon title names no cab; Tyger's page says Double Cab only
- Carbon steel, so the coating is the only rust protection
- Step pads are smaller than a flat board
Tyger's Star Armor is the pick for a Double Cab owner who wants a sturdy step with published numbers for about half the price of the Westin. The listing title reads Tyger Auto Star Armor Compatible with 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma and names no cab. The listing we found carries Tyger part number TG-AM2T20048 in its web address, and Tyger's own page for that part says it only fits the Double Cab with four full-size doors, not the Access Cab. Confirm the part number on the listing before ordering.
Tyger describes 2 in diameter carbon steel formed into a tri-tube structure, with a dual-stage E-coat and textured black powder finish and metal step pads at each door. It is the only pick here with a published capacity: Tyger quotes 500 lb per side. The kit includes both bars with pre-welded brackets and the hardware to mount to the rocker panel. Tyger says it bolts on with no drilling in about 20 minutes, which is the maker's figure, and lists the weight at 78.2 lb.
Tyger lists it at $455 with a 3-year warranty for US customers against manufacturing defects. The trade-offs are carbon steel, where the coating is the only rust protection, and a triple-tube shape that not every owner will like the look of. The step pads are also smaller than a flat board. For a truck that gets rinsed after winter drives, it is the value pick on this page.
Who it's for: Double Cab owners who want a rated, no-drill step for about half the price of a stainless bar.

#6: TAC 4.25 in Texture Black Side Steps Running Boards — Best for Access Cab

TAC 4.25 in Texture Black Side Steps Running Boards, 2005-2023 Tacoma Access Cab (2 pcs)
Confirm fit on listingAccess Cab only; TAC asks buyers to confirm fitment before ordering.- Title names the 2005–2023 Tacoma Access Cab
- 4.25 in oval bar with UV-resistant non-slip step pads (TAC)
- Heavy-duty mild steel with E-coating and heavy-texture black powder coat
- Bolt-on; mounting hardware and instructions included
- TAC lists it at $199.49, the lowest price here
- One-year warranty against rust, the shortest here
- No published weight rating
- TAC asks buyers to confirm fitment before ordering
Most Tacoma step listings are Double Cab parts, so the Access Cab owner has fewer to choose from. This one names the cab in its title: TAC Side Steps Running Boards Compatible with 2005-2023 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab, 4.25 in, texture black, two pieces. TAC's own store page for the same product repeats the 2005–2023 Access Cab fit and asks buyers to contact TAC to confirm fitment before ordering, which is worth doing.
TAC describes heavy-duty mild steel with an E-coating and a heavy-texture black powder coat, in a 4.25 in oval bend tube with UV-resistant non-slip step pads. It is a bolt-on, and TAC says all mounting hardware and instructions are included. TAC's page states a one-year warranty against rust. It does not publish a weight rating in the text we read, so ask the seller if you need a number.
TAC lists it at $199.49, marked down from $219.99, which makes it the lowest-priced pick on this page. At that price you are buying a coated mild steel bar, so rinse the brackets after salty drives and touch up chips. An oval tube of this width is a comfortable step for adults and sits closer to the body than a drop step. TAC also sells a 4 in oval bar for the Access Cab, and TrailFX sells its A1512B nerf bar for the 2005–2023 Access Cab. Both are in our product list.
Who it's for: Access Cab owners who want a simple bolt-on step at the lowest price and will confirm fit with the seller.

#7: Westin 56-534185 HDX Drop Wheel to Wheel Nerf Bars Textured Black — Best wheel-to-wheel

Westin 56-534185 HDX Drop Wheel to Wheel Nerf Bars Textured Black, 2016-2023 Tacoma Double Cab 6 ft Bed
Listed for this truckDouble Cab with the 73.7 in (6 ft) bed only.- Third step beside the bed for truck bed access (Westin)
- Solid one-piece steel bar with die-stamped step areas
- Isolator bracket supports the bar past the cab
- Removable step plates
- 3-year warranty
- Fits only the Double Cab with the 73.7 in bed
- Westin lists it at $1,028.99
- Fit line starts at 2016; no short-bed or Access Cab version found
A wheel-to-wheel bar runs past the cab to the rear wheel, which adds a step beside the bed. On this truck that makes bed length part of the fit, and Westin's listing shows it: 56-534185 HDX Drop Wheel to Wheel Nerf Bars, fits 2016-2023 Tacoma Double Cab 6 ft Bed, textured black. Westin's page gives the fit as the 2016–2023 Tacoma Double Cab Pickup with the 73.7 in bed. That is the optional long bed, not the 60.5 in bed that is standard on the Double Cab, so measure before ordering.
Westin describes solid one-piece steel construction with a hexagon tube shape and a textured black powder coat, die-stamped step areas for traction, removable step plates and a third step for truck bed access. An isolator bracket supports the bar past the cab. It mounts to the rocker panel with the included mount kit, and Westin says bolt-on installation with no drilling required on most applications. The warranty is 3 years, and Westin lists it at $1,028.99.
The third step is the reason to buy it. Reaching a toolbox, a rack or a cover latch is easier from a step than from the top of the tire. The costs are the price, a long bar with drop plates along more of the truck's side, and steel under powder coat where the cab-length HDX above has stainless. The fit line starts at 2016, unlike Westin's cab-length parts, and we did not find a wheel-to-wheel listing for the short bed or the Access Cab.
Who it's for: Long-bed Double Cab owners who load the bed from the side and want a step at the rear wheel.

How to install a running board on the Tacoma
- Confirm your cab and model year, and for a wheel-to-wheel bar, measure the bed. Check under the rocker for steps that are already fitted; they come off first.
- Lay out the kit and match the brackets to the instructions. Brackets are usually specific to a position and a side, so sort them before you start.
- Find the mounting points along the rocker panel and clean the threads. Bolt the brackets on hand-tight.
- For a power board, route the wiring and fit the door switches and bypass switch before the boards go on. RealTruck recommends a professional installer for this step.
- With a helper, lift the bar or board onto the brackets and start every bolt before you tighten any of them.
- Level the step front to rear, check the gap to the body, then torque every bolt to the value in the instructions.
- Recheck the bolts after the first week of driving, and again after the first trail run.
What to avoid
Double Cab parts on an Access Cab. The cabs are different lengths, and Tyger states its Double Cab bar is not for the Access Cab. Order a part that names your cab.
Buying across the 2024 line. Westin and Go Rhino use separate part numbers for the 2024 and later Tacoma. A 2005–2023 part is not listed for the newer truck.
Drop steps on a rock trail. The plates hang lowest. On rocks, use a slider such as Westin's XTS, or a power board that tucks away.
Jacking or strapping from a step. A weight rating is for a person stepping. Do not jack from a board or bar, and jack from a slider only if its maker says you can.

Do Double Cab running boards fit a Tacoma Access Cab?
No. A cab-length step is cut to the door opening, and its brackets are spaced for one cab. Toyota's 2023 release describes two cab types, the extended Access Cab and the four-door Double Cab. Tyger says on its Star Armor page that the Double Cab part only fits the cab with four full-size doors and is not for the Access Cab, which has two full-size front doors and two rear-hinged doors. TAC sells a separate bar whose title names the 2005–2023 Access Cab, and that is the Access Cab pick on this page. Count the doors, then read the title for the cab name. If the title names no cab, ask the seller.
Which 2016–2023 Tacoma grades came with factory running boards?
We could not confirm this from a Toyota source. Toyota's 2023 Tacoma release does not mention running boards, side steps, tube steps or rock rails on any grade or package, and Wikipedia's Tacoma page does not mention them for this generation. Steps can also be added by a dealer or a previous owner, which no grade list shows. The reliable check is the truck itself: look under the rocker panel for a bar and brackets, or read the window sticker and the accessory section of the owner's manual. If steps are fitted, an aftermarket set replaces them, so ask the seller whether the new brackets use the same mounting points.
Do 2005–2015 Tacoma running boards fit a 2016–2023 Tacoma?
It depends on the part, so go by the maker's fit list. Westin lists the HDX Stainless Drop 56-127752 and the XTS Rock Slider 42-14205 for the 2005–2023 Tacoma Double Cab, which covers both generations with one part number. Tyger lists Star Armor for 2005–2023, and TAC lists its Access Cab bar for 2005–2023. Not every part carries over. RealTruck lists the VoltStep power board 20442987PC for 2016–2023 only, and Westin lists the wheel-to-wheel HDX Drop 56-534185 for 2016–2023 only. If you are moving a used set from an older truck, look up its part number first. Do not assume the years.
Do 2016–2023 Tacoma running boards fit the 2024 and newer Tacoma?
Treat them as different parts. Westin's fit lines for the parts on this page stop at 2023, and the listing titles we found show separate part numbers for the newer truck: Westin's Outlaw drop bar is 20-12775 for the 2005–2023 Double Cab and 20-12785 for 2024–2026, and Go Rhino's RB20 kit is 69442987 for the 05-23 Double Cab and 69443280 for the 2024 Double Cab. Wikipedia says the 2024 truck uses the TNGA-F platform and comes as an XtraCab or a Double Cab. If you drive the newer truck, use our 2024–2026 Tacoma guide and buy only a listing that names 2024 or later.
Are rock sliders better than running boards on a Tacoma?
They do different jobs. A running board or nerf bar is a step, and it bolts on to make the climb easier. A rock slider is built to keep rocks off the rocker panel, and any step on it is a bonus. Westin's XTS slider, for example, is 12-gauge steel channel with a 1-3/4 in tube and a small bolt-on step plate, and Westin says it protects the rocker panels from potential damage. If the truck stays on pavement and gravel, a board or drop step is more comfortable. If it sees ledges and ruts, a slider is the safer choice. Check the maker's instructions before you jack from any slider.
Are power running boards worth it on a Tacoma?
They cost the most and keep the most clearance. RealTruck lists its VoltStep for the 2016–2023 Tacoma at $1,399.99, which is more than any fixed step here. In return the board tucks up when the doors close, so nothing fixed hangs under the rocker, and it drops to a 6 in wide step with LED lighting when a door opens. RealTruck recommends professional installation, and the kit adds motors, wiring and door switches that can fail. It suits a road truck that carries older passengers and still goes down a trail now and then. For hard off-road use, a fixed slider is simpler.
Do I need to drill to install running boards on a 2016–2023 Tacoma?
Usually not, according to the makers. Westin says the HDX Stainless Drop and the XTS Rock Slider are bolt-on with no drilling, and that the wheel-to-wheel HDX Drop needs no drilling on most applications. RealTruck lists the Go Rhino RB20 with no drilling, trimming or modifications, and the VoltStep power board with no drilling. Tyger says Star Armor bolts to the rocker panel with no drilling. TAC calls its Access Cab bar an easy bolt-on with all hardware included. If the brackets in your kit do not line up with the truck, stop and contact the seller. A kit that needs new holes is the wrong kit.
How much weight can Tacoma running boards hold?
Only one maker on this page publishes a number in the text we read. Tyger quotes 500 lb per side for Star Armor. Westin's pages for the HDX Stainless Drop, the XTS Rock Slider and the wheel-to-wheel HDX Drop do not state a rating, RealTruck's pages for the Go Rhino RB20 and the VoltStep do not state one, and TAC's page does not either. A rating applies to one side and assumes a person stepping on it. It does not make a step a jacking point or a tie-down. If the number matters to you, ask the seller for it in writing before you order.
Will a wheel-to-wheel step fit my Double Cab?
Only if the bed matches. A wheel-to-wheel bar runs past the cab to the rear wheel, so its length depends on the bed as well as the cab. Wikipedia lists the Double Cab with a 60.5 in bed as standard and a 73.7 in bed as an option. Westin's wheel-to-wheel HDX Drop 56-534185 is listed for the 2016–2023 Double Cab with the 73.7 in bed only, and the Amazon title calls it the 6 ft bed. Measure inside the bed at the rail from the bulkhead to the closed tailgate. We did not find a wheel-to-wheel listing for the short bed or for the Access Cab.
Do these steps fit the TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road and other grades?
Wikipedia lists six grades for this generation: SR, SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, Limited and TRD Pro, plus a Trail special edition. The makers we read sell steps by cab and model year, and none of the listing titles for our picks names a grade. That suggests one part per cab, but we could not confirm that every grade has free mounting points, or whether any grade left the factory with rock rails or steps in the way. For a TRD Pro, a Trail Edition or a lifted truck, send the seller your grade and cab and ask for a yes in writing. Lift kits also change the step height.
Buy Westin's HDX Stainless Drop for a Double Cab that wants a lower step, Go Rhino's RB20 for the widest platform, Westin's XTS if the truck sees rocks, and TAC's 4.25 in bar if you have an Access Cab.
Side steps on the 2016–2023 Tacoma come down to the cab. Find a part that names the Double Cab or the Access Cab, check that the fit line includes your year, and the rest is taste and budget. Westin's HDX Stainless Drop has the best mix of base metal, warranty and a no-drill install. Go Rhino's RB20 gives the biggest step on galvanized steel. RealTruck's power board keeps the stock clearance for the highest price here. Westin's XTS protects the rocker, Tyger's Star Armor is the rated value pick, TAC covers the Access Cab, and Westin's wheel-to-wheel bar suits the long-bed Double Cab.
A step also changes how you use the bed. A wheel-to-wheel bar makes it easier to reach a bed rack or the latch on a tonneau cover, so decide on those before you choose the step length. Inside the cab, a step keeps some mud off the sill and off your floor liners. If you have moved on to the 2024–2026 Tacoma, shop that truck's own guide, because the parts on this page are not listed for it.
How we chose
We did not install these parts ourselves. We chose them by the fitment each Amazon listing title states for the Tacoma and its cab, and by the specs the makers and retailers publish: material, step width, finish, drilling, warranty and weight rating, read on the Westin, RealTruck, Tyger Auto and TAC product pages in October 2026. Vehicle facts come from Toyota's 2023 Tacoma release and Wikipedia's Toyota Tacoma page. Where a maker publishes no figure, or we could not confirm a fact, the text says so. Prices named in the text were read on the maker or retailer page we name. Amazon prices move daily, so the button shows the live price.
