2019–2026 Ram 1500 Upgrades, Ranked: 4 Mods in Buying Order, With the RamBox and Classic Traps
Four upgrades for the fifth-generation Ram 1500, ranked in the order most owners should buy them. This truck's order is shaped by an older Classic sold under the same name through 2024, RamBox bins that change every bed part, a split tailgate that many covers exclude, and two cabs that divide the cabin accessories.

- Rule out the Classic first. Ram sold the older DS body as the 1500 Classic through 2024. Its liners, covers, boards and racks don't fit the DT.
- RamBox changes the cover and the rack. Same bed length, different parts: MX4 448227RB, RetraxPRO MX 80244, Lo Pro 584901. Most racks exclude it.
- Check the tailgate. Many standard covers are listed as not compatible with the 60/40 multifunction tailgate.
- Cab decides the cabin parts, bed decides the bed parts. Every liner and board pick is Crew Cab; the Quad Cab has the 6 ft 4 in bed.
- No hitch on the shopping list. Our data lists a Class IV, 2 in receiver. Look under the bumper to confirm yours.
Ram 1500 upgrades in priority order
Each step links to a full fit-checked guide for the 2019–2026 Ram 1500.
Floor liners first: the lowest price, and the Classic trap in its simplest form
Floor liners lead on the Ram because they cost the least and protect the part of the truck you use on every drive. They also carry this truck's best-known trap. From 2019 to 2024 Ram sold the new DT next to the older 1500 Classic, and both are registered as a Ram 1500. The floors differ: Husky sells set 94001 for the DT Crew Cab and 99001 for the Classic. After the body, two more facts decide fit. Cab comes first. Every full set in our guide is a Crew Cab part, and the Quad Cab shares only some front pieces, such as Husky's 13741 pair. Then lift the rear cushion. Husky's 94001 and the budget set are cut for factory under-seat storage, so a plain rear floor needs a seller's answer. Prices run about $100–$150 for the two budget sets, about $120–$180 for Mopar's all-weather mats and about $160–$230 for Husky's WeatherBeater, which Husky says is made in the USA with a lifetime warranty against cracks and breaks. Bench-seat trucks leave the center floor open; Husky's 83211 hump piece, about $40–$70, covers it. Husky's title stops at 2024, so confirm a 2025 or 2026.
Skip it if: You already have a molded DT set that locks onto the driver-side retention posts.
Our best overall: Husky Liners WeatherBeater 94001 ($160–$230)
Compare all 5 floor mats & liners picks →Tonneau cover second: one part number has to match four things
A tonneau cover takes second place because the bed is where the cargo rides, and it's the purchase with the most ways to go wrong on this truck. One part number has to match four things: the DT body, the bed, RamBox and the tailgate. The beds are 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in. RamBox trucks need RamBox parts even though the bed length is the same, and many standard covers are listed as not compatible with the multifunction tailgate. Prices in our guide run about $237 for Tyger's T3, about $490 for TruXedo's Lo Pro, about $599 for the Gator EFX, about $1,050 for the BAKFlip MX4, about $1,100 for the UnderCover Flex and about $2,150 for the RetraxPRO MX. The hard covers are rated at 300 lb for the Gator, 400 lb for the MX4 and Flex and 500 lb for the Retrax; soft covers carry no rating. Owners on 5thGenRams trace most leaks to the DT's tailgate corner gaps, so plan on a gap seal. And if a bed rack is likely, settle that before you pay, because the cover and rack have to be chosen as a pair.
Skip it if: You carry tall loads nearly every day, or you'd rather keep the TRX bed bar than fit a cover.
Our best overall: BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover 448227 ($1,050)
Compare all 6 tonneau covers picks →Running boards third: a tall Crew Cab that every passenger has to climb
Running boards rank third because the Ram is a tall truck and the step-in affects every rider on every trip, most of all in a Crew Cab that carries kids or older passengers. Fit turns on body and cab. The DT and the Classic have different bodies and rocker mounting points, and Go Rhino's and Westin's titles exclude the Classic by name. Every pick in our guide is a Crew Cab part; the Quad Cab's shorter rear doors need shorter boards under other part numbers. Prices run about $140–$220 for 6 in budget boards from BINARY STAR and PZ, about $160–$230 for SMANOW's drop steps, about $220–$350 for Westin's PRO TRAXX 4 and about $430–$600 for Go Rhino's galvanized RB20 Slim and RB20. A wheel-to-wheel Westin bar at about $450–$650 adds a step beside the bed, handy for reaching a RamBox. Go Rhino's titles stop at 2024, while the PRO TRAXX 4 lists 2019–2026. The cost is side clearance, and it grows on trucks with the optional air suspension, because a board bolted to the body drops with it. Higher trims offer factory power boards, which an aftermarket set replaces.
Skip it if: Your trim came with factory power boards you like, or the air suspension's entry mode is enough.
Our best running board: Go Rhino RB20 Running Boards Bedliner 69430687T ($450–$600)
Compare all 7 running boards & steps picks →Bed rack last: a good market on a plain bed, a thin one with RamBox
The bed rack comes last because it has the narrowest audience and the biggest bill, and on a Ram it has one large exclusion. RamBox bins sit in both bed sides with lids that open into the space where a rack's feet and side panels go. Putco's Venture TEC listing says without RamBox, and the GoRack listing doesn't mention it. On a plain 5 ft 7 in bed the market is good. RealTruck's GoRack, about $1,090, is rated 1,000 lb static and 600 lb dynamic and can mount to the stake pockets, a utility rail or T-slot rails on a cover. Putco's Venture TEC, from about $1,667, adds a 300 lb off-road figure and a no-drill stake-pocket mount. YZONA's adjustable rack, about $359, is rated 1,000 lb static and 500 lb moving but doesn't work with a cover. The 6 ft 4 in bed has fewer dedicated racks, and listings that span 2009–2026 mix the Classic's bed rails with the DT's. For tent campers this slot matters far more than its rank suggests. Count rack, tent and gear against payload.
Skip it if: Nothing you carry is taller than the cab or longer than the bed.
Our best overall: RealTruck GoRack Overland Truck Rack 9550101 ($1,090)

Towing: what the Ram already has
There is no trailer hitch guide for the DT Ram 1500 on this site, and the stored facts explain why most owners won't miss one. Our vehicle data lists a Class IV hitch with a 2 in receiver for this generation. We could not confirm from a Ram page that every trim and model year leaves the factory with the receiver fitted, so look under the rear bumper, or read the window sticker, before you assume. If the receiver is there, an aftermarket hitch adds nothing.
The tow rating is a separate question, and the headline needs care. Our data lists a maximum of 12,750 lb, and Wikipedia's DT page says a properly equipped Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 lb with a payload of up to 2,300 lb. Ram's own 2026 capability page is lower: up to 11,610 lb with the 3.0L Hurricane, 11,320 lb with the 5.7L HEMI, 10,000 lb with the high-output Hurricane and 8,130 lb with the 3.6L V6, each when properly equipped, with a maximum payload of 2,360 lb. So the ceiling depends on model year and engine, and neither source says which cab, bed and axle reach it. Your figures are on the door-jamb labels and in the owner's manual. A receiver never raises a rating; the lowest-rated part of the chain sets the limit.
One Ram detail helps trailer owners. Stellantis says the multifunction tailgate is trailer-friendly and opens without removing the trailer or hitch. Beyond that, the towing money is better spent on a ball mount with the right rise or drop and whatever brake control your trailer requires. Tongue weight counts against payload along with passengers, a hard cover, a bed rack and a tent.
RamBox: the option that changes every bed purchase
RamBox is the biggest fit trap on this truck. It puts lockable storage bins into both bed sides, over the wheel wells. The bed is the same length with or without it, so a tape measure won't tell you which part to order. Look at the bed sides: lidded bins mean RamBox, and they mean a different cover and a much shorter rack list.
Covers. BAK, Retrax and TruXedo each sell a separate RamBox part, and those parts are listed as working with or without the multifunction tailgate. Our guide quotes RealTruck at about $490 for the TruXedo Lo Pro 584901, about $1,100 for the BAKFlip MX4 448227RB and about $1,950 for the RetraxPRO MX 80244. UnderCover lists a RamBox Flex, FX31011, but its title covers 2019–2022 only and says it won't work with the black track system, so confirm it for a newer truck. The Gator EFX and Tyger T3 in our guide have no RamBox version.
Racks. The bin lids open upward, into the space where a rack puts its feet, uprights or side panels. Putco's Venture TEC listing excludes RamBox in its title. The GoRack listing says nothing either way. Clamp racks such as YZONA's depend on a clean, flat bed rail. Owners on 5thGenRams name custom builders such as Nutzo and the Dethloff contour rack, and warn that side-mounted gear can block the lids. Get the seller's fitment answer in writing.
What doesn't change. Floor liners and running boards are cab parts. RamBox has no effect on them.
| Truck | Hard covers | Soft covers | Racks |
|---|---|---|---|
| No RamBox, standard tailgate | BAKFlip MX4 448227, Gator EFX GC34008, UnderCover Flex FX31008, RetraxPRO MX 80243 | Tyger T3 TG-BC3D1044 | Widest choice: GoRack 9550101, Putco Venture TEC, clamp racks |
| No RamBox, multifunction tailgate | BAKFlip MX4 448226 (Amazon title reads 2020–2026; ask about a 2019) | TruXedo Lo Pro 585801 | Same racks; check that rear uprights and overhanging loads clear the swing doors |
| RamBox, either tailgate | BAKFlip MX4 448227RB, RetraxPRO MX 80244 | TruXedo Lo Pro 584901 | Putco's listing excludes RamBox; the GoRack listing is silent; get the seller's answer in writing |
DT or Classic, Crew Cab or Quad Cab, and which of two beds
Three facts about your truck answer most of the remaining fit questions.
Body. Wikipedia's DT page says the fourth-generation truck stayed in production through the 2024 model year and was sold alongside the new one as the lower-priced Classic. A 2019–2024 registration that reads Ram 1500 can be either. Our vehicle data flags the Classic's bed rails as different, and our guides found different floors and rocker mounting points as well. Good listings say 'new body' or 'not Classic'. Listings that name the Classic, 2009–2018 or five-lug wheels are for the old truck.
Cab. Wikipedia describes the Quad Cab as an extended cab with front-hinged rear doors and the standard-length bed, and the Crew Cab with either the short or the standard bed. There is no regular cab. Cab decides floor liners and running boards.
Bed. Measure inside at the rail from the bulkhead to the closed tailgate. Bed length decides the cover and the rack, and a Crew Cab can have either box.
| Truck | How to tell | Covers and racks | Liners and boards |
|---|---|---|---|
| DT Crew Cab, 5 ft 7 in bed (listed as 67.4 in) | Four full doors; about 67 in at the rail | Most cover choices; the GoRack and Putco rack listings are for this bed | Every liner and running board pick in our guides |
| DT Crew Cab, 6 ft 4 in bed (76.3 in) | Four full doors; about 76 in at the rail | 6 ft 4 in parts: BAKFlip MX4 448223, Gator EFX GC34009, Tyger TG-BC3D1045; fewer dedicated racks | Same Crew Cab liners and boards; Westin's wheel-to-wheel 21-534725 calls this bed 6 ft 5 in, so confirm with Westin |
| DT Quad Cab, 6 ft 4 in bed | Shorter rear doors | Same 6 ft 4 in covers and racks | Husky's 13741 front pair and 83211 hump piece are listed for it; the rear liner and the boards must be Quad Cab parts |
| 1500 Classic (DS), 2019–2024 | Previous-generation dash with a console or column shifter; five-lug wheels | Different bed rails; Tyger's Classic cover is TG-BC3D1015 | Husky 99001 liners and Classic boards; nothing on this page applies |
Split tailgate, air suspension, TRX and RHO: what really changes
Trim names cause more worry than they deserve on the Ram. These are the options and variants where our guides found a real difference. Check the tailgate first, because it is easy to miss on a used truck: Stellantis describes the multifunction version as a 60/40 split with two side-hinged doors that swing open.
| Truck or option | What it has | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Multifunction tailgate | 60/40 split doors that swing open as well as dropping; a $995 option in Stellantis' 2019 release | The standard MX4 448227, Gator EFX, UnderCover Flex FX31008, RetraxPRO MX 80243 and Tyger T3 are listed as not compatible; buy a split-gate or RamBox part number |
| Air suspension | Available four-corner system that Ram's 2026 page lists for Crew Cab models only; Wikipedia notes a mode that lowers the truck 2 in for entry | Boards move with the body and sit closer to the ground when it lowers; a slim board or nerf bar gives up less clearance |
| TRX (2021–2024) | Crew Cab, 5 ft 7 in bed, wider bodywork; check for the TRX bed bar | Covers need the bed bar removed; confirm boards, racks and the rear liner with the seller |
| RHO (2025+) | Crew Cab, 5 ft 7 in bed, wider bodywork | No listing in our guides names it and RealTruck's cover notes don't mention it; confirm every bed and rocker part |
| 2025–2026 trucks | 3.0L Hurricane arrives for 2025; our liner guide says the cab floor carried over | Husky 94001, Go Rhino RB20, TruXedo Lo Pro, GoRack and Putco titles stop at 2023 or 2024; BAK MX4, Tyger T3 and Westin PRO TRAXX 4 list 2026 |
Decide the rack before the cover, then install in this order
The bed rack is last on the buying list and first on the deciding list, because the rack you want can rule out the tonneau cover you were about to buy. The pairings our guides could document:
- T-slot cover plus GoRack: RealTruck says the GoRack can mount to any bed cover with a T-slot style rail system. Retrax sells the PRO as an XR (T-80243) with T-slot rails, which keeps the bed locked under a tent.
- Roll-up cover plus Venture TEC: RealTruck's page says Putco's rack is compatible with roll-up covers that mount inside the bed rails.
- Open-bed racks: YZONA says its adjustable rack is not compatible with tonneau or bed covers, and OTHOWE's 22.5 in rack is listed for trucks without one.
- Rails first: Putco sells TEC Rails for the 2019+ 5 ft 7 in bed that add dual T-slots and mount in the stake pockets without drilling. Confirm RamBox fit on the listing.
Hard folding covers are the open question. BAK's MX4 and Gator's EFX leave the stake pockets free, but our guides found no maker statement that a stake-pocket rack clears those covers on a Ram, so ask both sellers. RamBox changes both halves of the pair: the cover has to be a RamBox part, and the rack needs a written yes.
Then fit things in this order: floor liners, the cover (on a TRX the bed bar comes off first), a tailgate gap seal at the rear corners, then the rack over it. Running boards can go on whenever they arrive. When the rack is up, check that the cab-mounted third brake light is still visible, that the tailgate or both multifunction doors open fully, and that any RamBox lids still lift.
What to avoid
Parts listed for the Classic, or for 2009 onward. A 2019–2024 Ram 1500 can be the old DS body. Liners, covers, boards and racks for it don't fit the DT. Look for 'new body' or 'not Classic', and question any title that spans 2009–2026.
A standard cover or rack on a RamBox bed. The bed length is the same, but the bins change the fit. Buy the RamBox cover part (448227RB, 80244 or 584901) and get a rack seller's answer in writing.
Forgetting the split tailgate. Many standard covers are listed as not compatible with the multifunction tailgate. If yours opens like barn doors, buy only a listing that says it works with it.
Buying bed parts by cab, or cab parts by bed. A Crew Cab can have the 5 ft 7 in or 6 ft 4 in box. Covers and racks go by bed length; liners and boards go by Crew Cab or Quad Cab.
Frequently asked questions
What should I upgrade first on a 2019–2026 Ram 1500?
Floor liners, then a tonneau cover. Liners cost the least, from about $100 for a budget set to about $230 for Husky's WeatherBeater 94001, and they need three facts from you: DT or Classic, Crew Cab or Quad Cab, and whether storage sits under the rear seat. The cover comes second because an open bed leaves cargo wet and on display, and it's the purchase where bed length, RamBox and the tailgate all have to match one part number. Running boards follow on a tall Crew Cab. The bed rack comes last, but decide whether you want one before you pay for the cover.
Do I need to buy a trailer hitch for a 2019+ Ram 1500?
Probably not, but look before you assume. Our vehicle data lists a Class IV hitch with a 2 in receiver for this generation. We couldn't confirm from Ram that every trim and year leaves the factory with it, so look under the rear bumper or read the window sticker. If the receiver is there, an aftermarket trailer hitch adds nothing. The towing limit is a separate question. Our data and Wikipedia give up to 12,750 lb when properly equipped, while Ram's 2026 page tops out at 11,610 lb with the 3.0L Hurricane. Your own figure is on the door-jamb labels and in the owner's manual.
How much does it cost to add all four upgrades to a Ram 1500?
From the prices on our four guides' picks, a budget build runs about $840–$960: a budget liner set, Tyger's T3 soft cover, 6 in boards and YZONA's adjustable rack. YZONA says that rack doesn't work with a cover, so most budget trucks run one or the other; without the rack the total is about $480–$600. A mid build runs about $1,920–$2,220 with Mopar mats, a TruXedo Lo Pro or Gator EFX, Westin's PRO TRAXX 4 and the RealTruck GoRack. A premium build with Husky liners, a BAKFlip MX4 or RetraxPRO MX, Go Rhino boards and Putco's Venture TEC starts at about $3,310 and reaches about $4,650. All figures are approximate.
How do I tell a Ram 1500 DT from a Ram 1500 Classic before ordering parts?
Look inside, then at the wheels. Most DT trucks have a rotary gear selector on the dash, while the Classic keeps the previous generation's dash with a console or column shifter. Putco labels its DT bed rack as the new body with six-lug wheels to separate it from the five-lug Classic, so counting lug nuts is a second check. The model year won't tell you, because Ram sold both from 2019 to 2024. Makers split their catalogs the same way: Husky's liner set is 94001 for the DT and 99001 for the Classic, and Tyger's T3 cover is TG-BC3D1044 for the DT and TG-BC3D1015 for the Classic.
I have RamBox. Which of these upgrades change?
The two bed upgrades. Covers need RamBox part numbers: BAKFlip MX4 448227RB, RetraxPRO MX 80244 and TruXedo Lo Pro 584901. The standard MX4, the Gator EFX and the Tyger T3 are listed without RamBox. Racks are harder. Putco's Venture TEC listing says without RamBox, the GoRack listing doesn't mention it, and owners on 5thGenRams describe RamBox rack choices as limited and name custom builders such as Nutzo and Dethloff. Floor liners and running boards are cab parts, so RamBox doesn't affect them. A wheel-to-wheel bar can help you reach the bins, but confirm its bed length first.
Does the multifunction tailgate limit which tonneau cover or bed rack I can buy?
It limits covers a lot and racks very little. The 60/40 split tailgate, a $995 option in Stellantis' 2019 release, changes the top edge a cover seals against. The standard BAKFlip MX4 448227, Gator EFX, UnderCover Flex FX31008, RetraxPRO MX 80243 and Tyger T3 are all listed as not compatible. BAK sells the MX4 448226 for the split gate, TruXedo lists the Lo Pro 585801, and the RamBox versions of the MX4, RetraxPRO and Lo Pro are listed as working with or without it. A rack stands on the bed sides, so the gate still works, but tall rear uprights and overhanging loads can limit how far the doors swing.
I have a Quad Cab. Which upgrades are harder to buy?
Liners and running boards. Every full liner set and every running board pick in our guides is a Crew Cab part. Husky's 13741 front pair and 83211 center hump piece are listed for both cabs, but the Quad Cab's rear floor is shorter and needs its own liner. Go Rhino and Westin sell Quad Cab boards under different part numbers. The bed side is simpler. Our tonneau guide puts the Quad Cab with the 6 ft 4 in bed, so order 6 ft 4 in covers such as the MX4 448223, Gator EFX GC34009 or Tyger TG-BC3D1045. Racks are thinner there: the GoRack and Putco listings in our guide are 5 ft 7 in parts.
Does the Ram's air suspension change the case for running boards?
It can. Ram's 2026 page lists the Active-Level four-corner air suspension as available on Crew Cab models only, and Wikipedia's DT page says it has a mode that lowers the truck by 2 in for easier entry and exit. If that mode already gets your passengers in comfortably, boards drop down the list. If you still want them, remember that boards bolt to the body's rocker points. When the truck lowers, the board sits closer to curbs and steep driveways. A slim board or a nerf bar gives up less clearance than a wide board or drop steps.
What would you buy first with about $400?
The two upgrades with the least fit risk. A budget liner set at about $100–$140 covers a DT Crew Cab with under-seat storage, and its title excludes the Classic. Tyger's T3 soft tri-fold at about $237 covers a 5 ft 7 in bed with a 5-year warranty. That's about $340–$380 in total. The T3 isn't for RamBox or the multifunction tailgate. On a RamBox truck the lowest-priced cover in our guide is TruXedo's Lo Pro 584901 at about $490, so buy liners now and save for it. A soft cover is also a sensible placeholder while you decide on a rack, since it comes off quickly.
On the 2019–2026 Ram 1500, confirm you have a DT, then buy floor liners matched to cab and rear storage first and a tonneau cover matched to bed, RamBox and tailgate second, followed by running boards and a bed rack, and look under the bumper before spending anything on a hitch.
The fifth-generation Ram 1500 is an easy truck to accessorize once five facts are written down: DT or Classic, Crew Cab or Quad Cab, bed length, RamBox or not, and which tailgate. Floor liners need the first two plus a look under the rear seat, and they cost the least, so they go first. The tonneau cover needs the other three and does the most for what you carry, keeping cargo drier and out of sight. Running boards earn third place on height alone, though our guide's picks are all Crew Cab parts.
The bed rack sits last because few owners need one, but it has to be decided before the cover, and RamBox trucks have the thinnest choice of all. Tent campers should treat that as a reason to ask more questions, not to skip the rack. Owners of a 2025 or 2026 truck should check how far each listing's years run, and TRX and RHO owners should confirm every bed and rocker part. Each linked guide covers the fit details for its category.

We did not install any of these parts ourselves. The order comes from our four fit-checked 2019–2026 Ram 1500 guides, weighing how many trucks each upgrade suits, what it costs, how often it's used and how many fit traps it carries (DT or Classic, cab, bed length, RamBox, tailgate). Price bands are the prices listed on those guides' picks, checked at maker and retailer stores in September 2026, and are approximate. Vehicle facts come from our vehicle data, the guides' sources, Wikipedia's Ram 1500 (DT) page, Ram's 2026 capability page and Stellantis' 2019 tailgate release. Where we couldn't confirm a factory detail, the text says so.
